I AM SHOPPING FOR A MID PRICED BIKE, IM NOT REALLY SURE THAT I EVEN WANT DISKS ON IT, BECAUSE THERE MORE MAINTNECE(IM GUESSING),BUT IM LOOKING AT A KOMODO FOR 1500, WITH HAYES HYDROLICS, OR THE KONA PAHOHOE WITH HAYES MECHANICALS FOR 1200. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS IM CONSIDERING ALSO, BUT, ARE HYDROLICS REALLY THAT MUCH BETTER? WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? IS IT WORTH THE EXTRA 300 BUCKS????? I RIDE IN MUDDY, STEEP, SOMTIMES RAINY TRAILS, DONT RACE.

ANY ADVICE???

I personnally hate cable drag.I like the brake lever to quickly snap back everytime.all the time.regular brakes have good lever feel when new but after awhile the cable gets dirty and the lever's return action slows.hydraulic system does not have this problem.why do non disk owners continue to think disk brakes have maintenance problems? my hydraulic Hayes and Magura brakes have required zero maintenance.none.

I don't have a lot of expirience with the hayes mechanicals, but I do have quite a bit with the Avid mechanicals, hayes hydraulic and the shimanos (XT). The Avid mechs are outstanding! the only thing (IMO) that makes them better than hayes mechs is the tool free pad adjustment. Other than that, they seem to perform equally. The Hayes (and shimano) hydraulics give you a little more power and a fimer feel at the lever. Mechanicals will require a little bit more frequent attention, but they will never be time consuming. Hydraulics on the other hand-- you can practically forget about'em for months at a time but when they need maintenence it will be more time consuming. If you ride in really mudy condtitons I would encourage you to get the hydros, as you will not have to worry about grit getting into cables etc.

So which is it?.....fred³

you've mentioned three bikes in two posts. And two price ranges. If you're concerned about component failure then I suggest you hike. If you're worried about hydraulic lines breaking get the mechs. If you're concerned about air shock get the coil. Simple.

Since you ask for advice: stop using all capital letters. It means you're shouting. Luck.

You've mentioned three answers to one question. Since you seem to know everything, fred3, here is some advice for you: DONT BOTHER POSTING, YOU KNOW-IT-ALL! Simple.
I'd take your advice.....fred³

but I'm trying not to respond in kind so I'll leave you with your juvenile friends to figure out my response. It was neither sarcastic, nor mean as yours was meant to be. It's tough to answer a question when one can't decide what they really want to ask. If this is too difficult to understand then you need to spend more time with real people and less time on line.

Mech discs have come a long way (Avids are pretty sweet), but hyrolics are all the sweeter. With cable actuated you run the risk of getting that mud and rain in there that could affect performance. Hydrolics are bomb proof. Ride through anything in any condition and they stay consistent.

If you have the cash I'd go hydrolic, but if not you're still going to have great breaks. (And if you go cable, think about using something like Avid Flack Jackets).

I have one, love it. Granted, I have Avid mechs on mine, I don't like the Hayes hydraulics. Still a great bike, though.

Lose the caps, it's hard to read, and it's considered shouting.

Look more at the whole bike, rather than just the brakes. The Komodo, overall, is a much better bike than the Kona.

GET THE KOMODO!!(I used caps 'cause I was shouting) I have a 2001.
Green frame with the hayes hydros. I don't know about the warranty on the Kona, but Jamis is lifetime even on the aluminum frames. It doesn't hurt that it's a killer trail bike too. Parts spec can't be beat for the money.

Mech. disc's are a great low cost option but their performance is not up to par with hydro's this year shimano has come out with a low cost deore 525 model that when you factor in the price of brake levers and cables are getting very close to the same cost of avids or hayes mech. The magizine have given them great reviews
Shop around on the pricediyj98

I've sold the 02 Komodo for only $1375.00, so I know you can do better than $1500.00
I have used both for hundreds of milesJJHACK

My First experience with Disc was hayes hydro's. Just simply fantastic and trouble free. I could not really hope to have a better set of brakes then these.

I then bought a bike that had Avid Mechanicals after reading the reviesw here I gave them a chance. Anything I said about the Hayes is equal with the Avids. The modutation with the speed dial levers and the power is unmatched. I would say they are every bit as good as the Hydros. They do not self adjust but that is not an issue at all. The adjustment takes under a minute once a month or so.

The bigger advantage with the Avids is changing a flat tire. With the Hydraulics if you accidentally close the pads with the brake lever, You have a struggle to get them apart again. With the Avids or other mechanical disc brakes that cannot happen. As far as drag is concerned, with Avids there is no drag with trued wheels and proper adjustment. I had a learning curve to figure this out but with the proper guidance from this sites brake forum and some patience the Avids are now my brake of choice. I could happily live with either but the Avids seem more user friendly and work at least as good.

Just one guys opinion!
