| CRANKS: Shimano vs race vs whomever else | Cabin Fever Feb 17, 2002 1:06 PM | | I was just reading the post a couple posts down about cranks, and it got me thinking. what are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these cranks? why would someone want to get shimano cranks over raceface? or even over truvativ? or FSA? i haven't done any looking into this matter hardly at all, because I haven't had a need to replace the Icon cranks that came on my Trek 7000. What does one brand have to offer over the other? I think i would probably stay with shimano cranks if ever had to replace my cranks, simply because i ride plenty of shimano stuff and it is pretty reliable. support the monopoly. thanks. |
| Shimano RINGS | Matno Feb 17, 2002 1:40 PM | | Shimano rings have a patented design that shifts more smoothly than anything else (or so everybody says). I love my Shimano rings. However, I don't think the average mountain biker (or even the average enthusiast nut on this forum) can honestly tell the difference. My wife has a nice set of Race Face cranks/rings and they are just fine. Real Shimano advantage: price. Get a set of LX cranks and you'll be more than happy unless you're one of those clydesdales who drops 6 footers to flat on a regular basis. |
| Shimano RINGS | RockyRider Feb 18, 2002 11:36 AM | | Chainline has a bit to do with the quality of shifting as well. I find that a lot of stock BBs are a couple mm too wide to get the best shifting. As far as rings go I do think the shimano shift better. On my Race Face Turbine LP I would get chain suck up from the bottom with no load, on new rings going from the innner to the middle ring. After a couple sets of Race Face rings over the past couple years I decided to try the shimano rings (inner and middle) this spring and the chain suck is gone. My only concern now is the durability of the shimano rings- after only a couple hundred miles I'm seeing a lot of wear.
I have an FSA carbon pro crank set on my hard tail that has always shifted okay but it's nothing to write home about. One thing I will say about the FSA rings is that they sure last a long time. I think I may try Black Spire rings on my FSA when these wear out just to see how well they work. But if I don't like them I'll probably go right back to the FSA. |
