| sponsorship? | Geoff Feb 17, 2002 3:03 PM | | Hello,
Does anyone know the best ways or have any advice on getting sponors for xc racing. This will be my second full season of xc racing and I am thinking of moving up a class into sport or expert. It looks like a lot of the rider have some sort of sponorship, how did they get it? Should I just send a resume and video to bike shops and stuff or what?
Thanks |

If you are known as "that dork who buys everything mailorder and expects US to install it " then chances of getting sponsorship are minimal. Surely there is at least one shop with whom you have good rapport?
Shops don't have a lot of spare $$$. You might even have to buy your own uniform. Usually you will get some sort of dicount on parts/labor in return.
When i had a say in picking shop team members i would look for people who had a good positive attitude and made contributions to the cycling community. This includes volunteering and trail work as well as racing.
Another good way to get parts/accessories is from the reps. And a good way to meet reps is to work(at least part time) in a shop.
As far as cash goes, try going "outside" the industry. Surely you have friends and relatives who own businesses? We've been sponsored by local cafes, automotive shops/dealers, and beverage distributors. Do some brainstorming.
good luck. |
