| Proflex 953 | Peter MK Feb 18, 2002 6:27 AM | | Hello, I was given a proflex 953. Can anyone tell me about this bike - it's old I know but I think it's a decent bike. It's aluminum right? Can I get a softer rear shock for it? I think the front shock needs a tune up; it is soft and then hard as it compresses. Please email petermk1973@yahoo.com - Thanks! |

If the Proflex 953 is the bike I am thinking it is (It may not be) this must have been one of the earliest full susser's on the market, at least in the U.K. - I had a go on one (I think :) in around 92, 93 when my bike was a GT Karakoram Elite with a Girvin Flexstem up front (anyone else remember those ?) and my most affluent friend was riding a Team Marin with Manitou 2's on it. [I haven't thought about this for a long time :) but the first time we went out with him on his 1500USD (1K UKP) bike we rode down some steps - how we laughed when the rebound on his expensive elastomer forks catapulted him off into the bushes ! I laughed a bit less later that year when the Girvin aluminum hinge priece fractured and set me flying off the trail as well .. happy days !!!]
My recollections of the Proflex were that it was a bit like riding a Kangaroo - loads of bob and no damping but I've been riding a hardtail ever since and still am so take no notice of me when I comment on things FS:
IIRC the proflex were pretty expensive when the first came out - and I think the earliest ones may have been elastomer sprung ? - I'm posting this rather than emailing it so that someone more informed can put me straight. I think it may have been aluminium as well - early 90's were the transition time when people were split on whether or not aluminium was the way to go (the marin was a steel steed but Proflex were seen as a bit more progressive in the U.K. at least and I'm fairly sure thay had already gone to Aluminium.
