...I don't have any personal experience with the Hayes HMX. Some say the HMX is as good a brake as the Avid, others say not, but putting that debate aside, it's hard to overlook the ease of setup and adjustment of the Avids. Hayes uses readily available pads, since they're shared with some of their hydro units, but the Avids are easy to come by online and I'm beginning to see them in a few local shops and from third-party manufacturers. You can't go wrong with the top-notch customer service from either company. If you have any more specific questions, be sure to post them on the brake board.

I have the hayes....and I have 2 friends with the avids. First of all the avids are sooooo easy to set up compared to the hayes. But, if you really know how to put the hayes on right, you will have more power...usuable and brute force. At first I thought i made a mistake getting hayes, but i messed with them a little and got them to work perfect. All 3 of us have XTR levers and XTR cables...so this is a good comparison here. I think it all depends on price...Which ever one you can get cheaper will be better. Just my 3 cents
