| Chain slap on C-dale Scapel | JoeBob Feb 19, 2002 6:08 AM | | I demo'd a Cannondale Scapel this weekend. I loved the bike. One annoying problem was that the chain slaps the carbon fiber chain stay in about half the gears. It's fairly loud. I'm thinking about getting one of these bikes and am wondering if anyone has a fix for the chain slap. The chainstay has plastic protective tape on it. |
| Chain too long | DJS Feb 19, 2002 6:31 AM | | The chain is too long or you are riding the bumpy flats in granny chainring. Granny chainring is for climbing, not for cruising or downhilling.
Ive dialed in and ridden plenty of these bikes (both 2x9's and 3-ringers) never noticed anything out of the ordinary. |
| Need help with 2X9 | Frank Feb 19, 2002 9:03 AM | | Hi,
I have a CAAD 5 ('2000) with the original 2X9 drivetrain. Is there a way to tune it so the chain does not fall off (out, on the cramkarm) when backpedalling (or bouncing) when you are on the big ring front/small gears... it is pretty annoying I am thinking going back to 3X9 to see if it helps. I have heard of a fix involving a diff. BB... I currently have an ultegra(original length)... something tells me that from a 2X9 to a 3X9 you need to change BB lenght. Do you know something about this my Cannondale LBS is not helpfull. |

For instance on the Scalpel it's essential that you get the mounting height and the angle correct (slightly inwards at about 1mm). You might also want to check the smoothness of your freewheel. If it has a high resistance it'll only aggravate your problem and cause the chain to become very relaxed at the top when not pedaling or pedaling backwards. |
| re: Chain slap on C-dale Scapel | divve Feb 19, 2002 9:17 AM | | It does indeed happen when you freewheel a lot over rough ground at speed. The Scalpels here usually have a chain stay protector made out of some sort of stretchy fabric. The one by Cannondale fits well if you place the velcro side along the bottom curve of the carbon chain stay. Stretch the protector around the chain stay to close it and work the velcro a bit until it closes without too many waves and it will stay put.
You can find the part number below (not sure but I think the thinner one has the best fit)
