| Time Clipless and Shaved Cleats | JTK Mar 11, 2002 10:15 AM | | After two very painful, bloody and embarrassing falls (I was basically at a standstill, my freewheel locked up and caused my chain to pop off and I fell right over with my feet in the pedals..TWICE!) I did some research and discovered that these pedals aren't the easiest to get out of. There was some mention in the review section re: Goatspeed cleats and shaving the existing cleats. Does anyone have any information on how to file the cleats I have or where I can find these "goatspeed" cleats?
Thanks! |
| here.... | Jekyll Mar 11, 2002 10:22 AM | | No reason for them but if you must: go here. |
| Yeah, just take the stock ones and shave them down a little if | arch Mar 11, 2002 10:51 AM | | you need to. It pretty much happens over time anyway.

| looks like you could file yourself... | Santa Cruz Mar 11, 2002 10:52 AM | | Looks like you could use a file and modify your cleats. I don't want to oversimplify my approach. But if you use the speedgoat picture as a model, it looks like it would be fairly straight forward.
Has anyone done this themselves? |
| Thanks... I'll try that 'cause.. | JTK Mar 11, 2002 11:06 AM | | i'm a bit hesitant to get back on the bike without some modifications to the release. I banged myself up pretty good over the weekend and will be out of commission for at least a week now. |
| You'd be better off.... | fred³ Mar 11, 2002 12:06 PM | | staying off of the trails till you're used to them and they've broken in on their own(and you've used them enough to strengthen those muscles that use them). Shaving will help, but you'll still fall if you're not used to them. Luck. |
| here.... | UzziRidin' Mar 12, 2002 8:16 AM | | I agree with Jekyll. I had the same problem you did, until I bought the shaved down cleats from Speedgoat, well worth the money. It's much easier to get in and out now.

| re: Time Clipless and Shaved Cleats | Chester Mar 11, 2002 11:37 AM | | Don't you realize that the company now sells all its pedals with the "new" cleats. The old ones were 15 or 20 degreesa and the new ones which will fit even old pedals are now 13 and 17 degrees.
So, If you like, you can just buy a new set of cleats, though the price seems high to me for such tiny bits of metal. Get the new ones and set them to 13 degrees and then perhaps even more important...as has been discussed here.....make sure they are not catching on the shoe.

| re: Time Clipless and Shaved Cleats | mudgutts Mar 11, 2002 1:34 PM | | Yep, if you want just whip out the old file and go over the edges, but the cleats wear out on their own very fast. I love mine! |
| re: Time Clipless and Shaved Cleats | rickm Mar 12, 2002 9:35 AM | | I shaved mine down myself with a grinder stone attached to an electric drill. It was easy, and it works great. That was about 2 years ago and I am still using them. |
| Shoe interference? | B R H Mar 12, 2002 3:17 PM | | Be sure to eliminate this first. Made all the difference in the world for me. Shaving the cleat only improved things a tad more (reduced release angle slightly). |
