Gooseberry Mesa - what's the "dilly" yo?Cabin Fever

i've been seeing all kinds of people plugging this place as equal to if not better than Moab and such. So far, being a lowland person, my experience out west has been confined to a week long trip to durango, moab, and fruita. what does Gooseberry Mesa have to offer? where is it in relation to Moab? i basically just want to know more about this place. thanks.

AOL sucks.

Gooseberry Mesa is in the southwestern part of Utah near the city of Hurricane. It's very close to Zion National Park. It is a different style of riding... alot of low speed manuvering, etc. I did not find it too technically demanding, although some think it is. Personally, Moab and Fruita offer so much more than the Hurricane area.
no idea... Q, though (unrelated)GMF

Is "dilly" a movie reference... in particular "Pootie Tang"?

It's better than Moab and different than Fruita.Pete.

Better than Moab IMO in that the area has much more slickrock (that's more technical than most of Moab) and also something that Moab is undersupplied with....singletrack.

The Fruita/GJ area has many more trails, more singletrack, more climbing and way less slickrock.

Gooseberry's an hour and a half Northeast of Vegas.

Yeah, alot of Moab's trails are wide open or two-track, but man that's what makes it fun at speed. On Porcupine rim and some others, you're flying from side to side trying to maintain momemtum while picking the least deadly ledge to jump off of. Sometimes it seems like trails with nothing but very defined singletrack kinda limit your fun factor. Not bashing singletrack, but Moab's pretty great.
I'm with you brother - can't we love all the trails?Rider Mel

Howdy, I have to agree. While I love singletrack riding, I still haven't found a place to have more fun than Moab. That said, there are SOOOOOOO many great place to ride. East coast, west coast, mountains, foothills, dirt, rock, logs - they are all pile of fun and offer their own unique challenges. No matter how you slice it, even a bad day riding is pretty damn good!

Cheers!

GB Mesa. I have ridden out there twice. It is a real nice place to ride. But I don't think it is seriously as nice as Moab or Fruita. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice place, but Fruita and Moab have a lot more trails. As a single trail system, it is hard to beat, but as an area, biggie ups to Moab and Fruita, they are 1, 2 in my book. But like Moab, it is a freaking inferno during late May - September.

Gooseberry Mesa is a single trail network of about 20 miles, covering an area about the size of that covered by the Slickrock Trail in Moab. Being a mesa it is basically flat - about 200 feet elevation gain from one end to the other. The riding is about half slickrock and half dirt connectors. The major trails are the North Rim Trail, of intermediate technical difficulty, and the South Rim Trail, of advanced technical difficulty. There is no extreme technical, no downhill, and no fast singletrack.

I ride the Moab trails regularly, but Gooseberry is my favorite. There is a new technical challenge every few yards, non-stop. Of the riders I talk to 90% absolutely love this trail. However, expert technical riders and those looking for a tough aerobic workout can find other trails they like better at Moab.

There are a few other superb trails very near Gooseberry Mesa - my favorites are Little Creek Mesa and Green Valley Loop. A little further away you could add several great Alpine trails at Brian Head and some fine trails near Panguitch.

Compare Gooseberry with Moab? For a single, fun trail most locals pick Gooseberry over any of the Moab trails. For a fun, mountain biking destination everyone would pick Moab. For the trail diversity, from Slickrock to Porcupine Rim, everyone would pick Moab. Looking for a great place to ride in December, January or February - Gooseberry Mesa without doubt; it's a little cold in Moab.
