Eliminating Chain rub while in middle ring.(3 posts)

Eliminating Chain rub while in middle ring.Jeff K

Any tricks or tips for eliminating chain rub. The spacing seems okay on the big and small chain ring. However, when I'm in the middle ring, and the two biggest cogs, I get chain rub.

Front deraileur adjustment is a pain in the @ss. It's hard to get them perfect. You may want to try rotating the deraileur slightly so that the cage is twisted a little in at the back. You may get some noise in the highest smallest cogs but you usually use those gears less than the big ones.

Seriously, it's the easiest way to get rid of chain rub. SRAM's indexing (9 derailleur positions for 3 rings) allows you to tweak the front derailleur position to prevent rub. If you stay with Shimano, it can take a lot of effort to set up the derailleur.

As the other poster suggested, it might be better to try to get your drivetrain noise-free in the larger cogs. Try adjusting the cable adjustment barrel on your shifter to pull the derailleur in slightly (towards your frame) to help get the chain away from the inside of the cage.
