How many bearings into each side of the Front hub??? I have heard 9 or 11...10

i have heard the front has 9 1/4" and the back has 11 3/16" inch...apparently this is not standard...

or do I just put em' in till I can't fit anymore!

Shimano Deore hub...if this helps!
a little confused...Gookie

Ok, I'm a little confused why this question was asked...? If you take the hub apart, (which I do on a seasonal basis) as you're taking the bearings out, count how many balls there are, and put that many back in... If they manage to all fall into a container at once, then you count the number and divide by 2... If that fails then you can try putting them in until there's no more room left... I just rebuilt my back wheel a couple days ago... It's a Shimano Parallax (yeah, it's not the best) it's got 8 balls in each side if I do remember correctly...

I have a stupid question:if the bearings are sealed is it possile to service them? The reason I'm asking is that most hubs, pedals, headsets, etc have sealed bearings but I see so many question on this site asking how to service hubs, etc that I'm confused.Thanks.
sealed = no maintenanceMossy

Other than replacing the unit when its trashed.

Most bearing overhaul questions come from those with cup and cone/ loose-bearing types..
not necessarily true... you can rebuild them...Louie

You can rebuild 'sealed' cartridge bearings. Usually all you have to do is pop off the dust seal (use a knife blade). Then flush them out (wd40, toothbrush, compressed air). When clean, pack with grease, and pop the dust seal back on. I do it all the time. Hubs, RaceFace BB, King headset, etc. You can get a LOT of life out of those 'sealed' bearings if you maintain them.

You just replace them. It's not possible to get past the seals to clean and relube without ruining the seals. That's why they're called "cartridge" bearings.

As for the loose bearings in the hub. Just ask for enough new balls at your LBS to do the hub in question. Shouldn't be more than a couple of dollars even for the good ones. And if the LBS guy doesn't know how many you need without asking then I'd start shopping somewhere else real quick.
You are correct....Gary

Just buy the new cartridge bearings. Usually, $6-$9 apiece. You don't go around popping the dust seal.
doesn't hurt them if your are carfull ..litephil

and you dont need to take the bearings out of the hub to greese them.
been doing this for years on motor cycles, bikes, skatboards,rc cars you name it, with no problems.just be carefullnot to damage the seal.
how much do new ones...Dal\l

...it depends what size and where you get them. Cartridge bearings, I think they are usually about $6 to $12 each. Keep in mind that you need at least 2 of them for a hub. And you have to remove them to replace them. Removal usually takes longer than the cleaning part anyways. If you have more money than time, just let a shop do it.
Your price is about right.......NMGary

The typical shimano front hub has eleven 3/16" bearings in each side for a total of 22, and the rear has nine 1/4" bearings in each side for a total of 18.
Sounds like Shimano varies between their hubs and model years.Leisure

My old LX hubs for example used 18 1/4" balls both front and rear.
