| trek 9.8/9.9 owners, please help... | split Mar 11, 2002 5:46 PM | | posted this message in "Lets talk about shocks" but nobody's helping me out.
For 19.5" 1999+ Trek 9.8/9.9 frames, what's the shortest steerer length that I can run. Trying to see if the old fork will fit on the new frame. THanks for the help. |
| Grab your tape measure | Kittmer Mar 12, 2002 5:53 AM | | Better yet, get a big pair of calipers or something else with two parallel surfaces, because here's what needs to be measured: assuming there is a fork on the bike, measure from the bottom of the lower headset race (the one on the fork) to the top of the top headset race. (The races are the parts that fall off if you take your fork out, as opposed to the cups which are pressed into the frame.)
Then, measure how tall the clamp is on the stem you wish to use. Add this to the height of the headset you just found. Subtract no more than 3/8", or 10 mm for the cap the goes on top of the steer tube.
This is the minimum steer-tube length. Add to that measurement any spacers you want to include. And when you measure a fork to see if it will fit, it would be a good idea to take the lower headset race that you will use and install it on the fork in question, then measure, using the lower surface as a reference (as above).
If this is all too much just find someone with the right number.
Good luck!
PS how do you like that frame? I'm just under 6' and ride an 18" (ctt) OCLV hardtail . How well does your bike fit you? |
| don't have the frame...YET | split Mar 12, 2002 6:11 AM | | Well, I don't have the frame but I'm determined to get one. None of my local bike shops have a demo on hand nor know by heart the steerer tube length required. Thus, I can't really do the measurements you suggested and I don't know how well it fits. I'm just under 6' too, but the LBS say I should fit a L 19.5". Riding a demo M (17.5) trek feels a little small but that may just be the stem length or saddle set back, I don't know. My current rig, a rocky mountain 18.5 fits me like a glove and I'm hoping that a new OCLV will too after a few adjustments here and there. I'll probably use a shorter stem 'cause of the Pro Fit Geometry.
I've got a 01 SID race that I'd REALLY like to keep but it's cut at 7.5". |
| give this a try | Kittmer Mar 12, 2002 11:50 AM | | http://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2002/manuals/OCLV_types.pdf
is a link to a tech article, and on page 2, in the chart, you'll find that the head tube length is 5.8 inches. Do you know the stack height of your headset? Add that to 5.8, plus stem and any spacers, take off max 3/8", hope that it's close to 7.5"
yeah, my frame feels a bit small, I ride with my seat all the way back in the rails and I think the top-tube could be longer. Check the rest of the specs on that document and compare them to Rocky's specs if you're worried about fit. If you don't think it'll work, well, you know, i'd be happy to trade OCLV frames ... he he ;~) |
