Are AM classic disk hubs reliable?(9 posts)

Are AM classic disk hubs reliable?jamesD

I'm thinking of installing a disk brake in front but I don't want to add too much weight(I'm running Hugi 240s now). I am considering the AM disk hubs cause they are pretty light but I heard they are made in TAIWAN??!! Does anybody have any experience with these hubs? Are they reliable?
Fine for dry conditions or road (nm)DJS

Only fine for dry conditions?jamesD

Doesn't it sort of defeat the purpose of using disks if it only works in the dry?

Most of the complaints in the reviews have to do with the failure of the grease fitting system to push out the old grease the way it should or to where it should. Dave Thomas from Speed Dream Wheels is building me a new rear wheel right now and is using the Am Classic, but he removes the standard bearings and replaces them with high quality Swiss sealed bearings. He says for my weight and type of riding (135 lbs/XC & trail) that it will be lighter than King, perform well, and require little maintenance. He's got quite a reputation, so I'm giving it a try.
how can you avoid not gaining weight when going disc?ibismojo

i'd stick with chris kings if you're really that weight conscious. White Industries are a good choice but they're a bit on the heavy side. strong and smooth, easily servicable. my favorite :)
If he is weight conscious, he would go with Am Classic...chris2fur

Maybe you don't realize that Chris King hubs (while totally top notch in quality) are heavier than the American Classic hubs.
i suggest chris king cause...ibismojo

he felt worried that the american classics weren't going to be strong enough. so what's the next lightest thing other than american classics? chris kings...

there is bound to be a weight penalty, but I don't want to gain a full lb or something.

i've got a silver 32 hole front disk am classic hub on a velocity rim, 3 cross laced 14/15 spokes, alloy nipples. light as, and lighter than some king front disk wheel builds i'v seen. only 6 months on it so far, but no problem at all, even insome pretty sloppy northeast conditions.

also have some older am classic hubs on my singlespeed that are over ten years old. bearings have been changed once.... still going strong!

no ideas where they are made, but the company is in florida.
