| 8-speed on 7-speed hub | mtbnut Mar 12, 2002 7:14 AM | | Looking to save a few bucks before upgrading bike next year. However, I need a rear wheel/hub now. Thinking of buying brothers used wheel/hub cheap this year. The problem is its a 7 spead and I'm riding 8. If I put my casette(8) on the hub(7), will I have problems? Will it even fit? I know you can go from 8 to 7 or 9 to 8 with spacers but what about going up? If I can't should I go with a Mavic 517 with XT ($135) from LBS or do you know of a better fully assebled wheel deal? |

So far as the wheels goes - 517 on XT is a nice combo and if you don't know how to true and maintain your wheels then having your LBS build them is probably worth the slight price penalty. That way you always have somewhere to go to bitch if something goes wrong.
You may also want ask around to see if anyone is riding wheels built by the LBS you are considering to see how they are holding up. |

| It WILL work | GMF Mar 12, 2002 12:22 PM | | I still run 7sp on most of my bikes, but use 8sp 11-28 XT cassettes. I just take off the 11t cassette and bolt it on the remaining 12-28 like i would any other cassette. You might need a very thin spacer behind the cassette for you to get your lockring tight.
Consequences?
1) one less gear in back, obviously.
2) less-dished rear wheel, when all other things being equal means a stronger wheel
3) you will need to readjust your deraillur so it wont shift into the spokes.
4) big deal. If money is the concern, it'll work just fine, and get you on the road in like 15 minutes.
Enjoy!
