| Can anyone suggest a strong rear hub? | Code Apr 2, 2002 1:27 PM | | I currently have a Mavic tubeless rear wheel that comes with a '02 Giant NRS 1. Over the past year I have gone through at least five of these rear wheels and now the warranty is out and my current wheel/hub seems to be dying. Every time that the wheel had to be replaced it was because of a poorly designed freehub. I am now looking to buy a new 24 hole 9spd rear disc hub if my current one does indeed give out. I have looked at XT but heard that their freehub design is prone to breaking just like my other ones have. I have been thinking along the lines of a Chris King, but don't really want to spend $280 on a hub. Can anyone suggest a hub with a strong freehub design for less than $200? Thanks.
P.S. Thanks to my LBS and Giant each time the wheel broke they replaced the entire thing in a week or less free of any charge or hassle. Great customer service :)

| more info | Cosmo Apr 2, 2002 1:55 PM | | Have you been given any reason as to why the hubs are failing??? |
| How much do you weigh? | Rivet Apr 2, 2002 2:11 PM | | If your a big guy with lots of torque maybe that's the reason. As far as hubs, your pretty limited because of the 24 hole rim. Either Chris King or American Classic/Shook off the top of my head. |
| How much do you weigh? | Code Apr 2, 2002 2:28 PM | | With full gear I can probably weigh up to 210lbs(Winter buildup :) ). I do do quite a bit of weightlifting also... If I spend $280 on a hub, do you think it is likely that 24 spoke rims will become more prevalent so that I could use it with my next wheel? Thanks.

| More info | Code Apr 2, 2002 2:22 PM | | I have taken the thing apart myself and every time it is obvious that the internal teeth(hub, not cassette side) have chewed gashes into the cassette side piece and eventually the freehub seizes. I have also had a tooth on the cassette side break in half and chew the hell out of the internals. I believe that it is caused by a weak spacer inside or a general non-meshing of parts inside that allows the cassette and internal piece to move side-to-side and scratch the insides.

| I don't own one but... | CraigH Apr 2, 2002 3:34 PM | | from talking to people who do & from walking through the pits at the WC race at Grouse last year, Hadley seems to be the hub of choice. They aren't cheap but I've heard they are a little less than the King.
You might want to go with a 32 hole rim though. 24 hole is not all that common, and your wheel would probably be stronger. |
| Hmm sell my current rim? | Code Apr 2, 2002 5:19 PM | | In order to go to 32 hole I would have to buy a new rim(not to mention spokes and what not). For $70 for a Mavic X3.1 UST Disc... I would really rather not spend that much money, do you think I could sell a perfectly fine 24 hole Mavic UST Disc rim for about the same? I suppose if I buy a hub that should last me a long time I might as well get more of the standard so that I can keep using it with diffrent wheels in the future... Thanks :)

| Changing to a different hub... | CraigH Apr 2, 2002 6:57 PM | | will probably require different length spokes anyway.
If you are talking about using a 24 hole rim because you have a used one, most wheel builders won't build with a used rim. It will be a hard sale too.
So, to go for a new hub, you are most likely looking at new spokes & rim anyway.
I don't know anything about tubeless rims, so can't help you there.
Sorry! $$$$... |

JUST BUY A KING REAR HUB.IT HAS A 5 YEAR WARRANTY .EXCELLENT SERVICE AS WELL.
I WASTED ALOT OF TIME MYSELF TRYING TO MAKE A CHEAPER HUB/HUBS WORK.PAY THE EXTRA ON THE KING,IT SAVES ON ALL THOSE EXTRA LACING COSTS . |
| go with a new rear wheel | Bob Apr 3, 2002 5:42 AM | | hi Code,
I have the 02 NRS-1 too. And weigh about the same as you. I noticed a lot of flex out of the stock X3.1 24 spoke wheels. I didn't have the hub problems like you, but I knew I wanted something stronger.
At our size I wouldn't trust any 24 spoke wheel. Why limit your self to buying a 24 spoke hub when rims run about $40-$50?
I called Speedgoat and had a set built up with Hope Bulb hubs and Mavic F219 rims, 32 hole 3x. And they're super strong.
The hub is about $200, about $75 less then a King (so toss the $75 into a new rim, spokes and nipples)
If you want a cheaper alternative, how about a good ol' Shimano XT disc hub with a F519 and build would be about $200 for the whole thing. Not the lightest, but should last you a while. |
