XTR V-brakes, anybody have to do this?(7 posts)

XTR V-brakes, anybody have to do this?Gary

My xtr brakes, when installed, didn't have enough spring tension even with adjustment screws turned all the way in. Cables and sheaths all in good shape with no sharp bends, etc. Brake arms move freely. I had to take adjustment wire springs and bend them, on all 4 arms, to increase tension. Works, but that doesn't seem to be how they were designed? I don't think all 4 could be worn out. Thanks...

It's normal. If you bend them all, you can use adjustment screws for minor adjustments after that.

Pothing's Nerfect!

I don't know if its normal. I didn't have to do it and my frame and shock are normal as in fairly new.
its all right, don't worry about itbikingzac

I work at a shop and I have to do it all of the time, don't worry about it, it is generally a frame problem not a brake problem though. But overall it doesn't affect anything.
Happens with wide rims - yep..bend them. nmDJS

Frame mount related ...Ransak

I just installed a set of XT v-brakes a few days ago on my wifes Kona (older frame) and had a similar problem. Y'know those little pins that fit into a little hole beside the big hole where the mounting bolt goes? Well it seems that the tension of the v-brakes depends largely on the location of this little hole vis-a-vis the placement of the little pin. On the Kona, the brake mounts had THREE little holes to choose from. The first two left the brakes with zero tension, while the last hole provided nearly enough tension (I had to do a little bending myself ... come to thing of it, with a little literary bending, this post could start to sound like the three little bears, ... but I digress).

This leads me to believe that while all XTR and XT v-brakes are made the same (mostly), all frames are not.

Bend away.

You may be able to reverse the spacers where the pad mounts to the brake arms. The 2 spacers on each side are different thickneses. By swaping them, your brake arms will be more upright instead of pointing away from each other. This will help to make up for a wide rim. Hope this made sense.
