What kind of sand are you running on? Dry or wet? Packed or loose? Shallow or deep? I can't claim to be an expert on this, but I do run into a fair amount of sand out in the deserts of SE Oregon.

I've found if the sand isn't too deep or is firm underneath, most knobby tires I've used have worked fine - narrower might be better so it digs down into the firm stuff, but I haven't experimented with this enough to say for sure.

If the sand is looser and deeper (more than an inch or two) then you want a wider tire that provides flotation, and with wide bar-type lugs oriented across the tire for traction. As an extreme example, look at the tires used on dune buggies and you'll get the concept. Running low pressure helps a LOT too. I think generally a tire that works well in mud works well in loose sand too, as long as the width is sufficient. I recently bought Hutchinson Alligators to deal with loose conditions - mud and scree as well as sand. So far they've seen a few stretches of loose sand and seemed to do really well.
