| Is there an easy way to get rust off bolts? | roots Apr 3, 2002 9:29 AM | | surface rust on bolts isn't a big deal, but if there is an easy way to get rid of it, i'd like to know. |
| not really. get new ones - 20 cents at the hrdware store. more | DJS Apr 3, 2002 9:43 AM | | or go to a local bike shop and see if they have a QBP kit (big plastic bins) of stainless steel metric fasteners.
If you have a really complete hardware store, you might find stainless metric allen bolts, but not likely. |

It's rusted becasue the nickel plating on the inexpensive fasteners has chipped off exposing carbon steel which is very susceptible to rusting. Your best bet is to change them with new cheap bolts, or get ahold of some in a material that won't rust (stainless, aluminum, ti)

| Dremel tool with the wire brush attachment | club Apr 3, 2002 12:21 PM | | I just cleaned up a set of Mafac oldschool cantilever brakes I found in the dumpster with my Dremel. Now the aluminum's polished and the steel fittings are showroom new. |
| Naval Jelly. (more) | Danny Apr 3, 2002 4:07 PM | | You can find it at any Marine (that means boats) Supply store. You just brush it on and then wash it off with water. The rust just falls away.
