Haven't used the Ulitmates, but I recently switched from AD 5s to Arch Rivals, and I'd say the ARs are a big improvement. Not that the ADs weren't good, they were better than the LX's I previously had, but the ARs (along with AD7 levers) are awesome. One-finger braking is tight! They're way stiff and I don't get any flex when I'm really cranking down on them.

Like I said, don't know about the Ultimates, but you can't go wrong with Arch Rivals. HTH.

Peace

if cost isn't a factor then go with with the Ultimate,..... it's name says it all. The ultimate is also lighter and about as good as it gets for a linear pull brake; however, the Arch Rival is no sloutch either.

I know two people who were dissapointed by the arch rivals. they bought on clearance thinking it was a good deal. complaints were that the arch really didn't serve purpose that SD wer just as good or better. ultimateis also sealed if that makes a big difference.

The arch isn't a stiffener the same way that a booster is so maybe they were thinking that the arch should increase leverage above and beyond a standard V type brake. All the arch does is create a pivot for the brake pad to swing parrallel to the rim just as Shimano's V Brake does. Most other V brake clones are really just rotating about the brake boss so the pad actually swings in an arc. The arch prevents this. That's all.

I love my arch rivals though adn wouldn't trade them for anything but disks.

Very smooth setup. Light and stop on a dime. No idea about the Rivals. I almost got a set before I talked myself into the Ultimates. Doesn't take much to talk me into top of the line, though. ;-)
I think SD-7s are the best value...Mossy

If you wanna go pimpy, though, go with the Ultimates..
Best brakes = UItimates, Best value = SD7Applejuice

I had Ultimates on my last bike. Let me start by saying that aesthetically they are amazing. You will look at them and drool. They are beautiful in a way that XTR only dreams of. The brakes and the levers and simply art.

In terms of performance, the SD7 are probably the best value out there. Great, great brakes. I haven't used them but I've also heard words of praise for the Arch Rivals.

What can I say? If they're Avid brakes, they are the best.
Agreed....celly

I just felt like spoiling myself. Avid makes great stuff for the $$$ at all their price points.
