XTR front derailleur, will it work...... (12 posts)
| XTR front derailleur, will it work...... | Gary Apr 24, 2002 8:37 PM | | I know an XTR f. der. won't work on compact cranks, but does anybody know whether it works on the 4 bolt XT hollowtechs with the 104-64mm spread? |
| Yes, and FYI it will work for compact cranksets too. Cheers (nm) | Dr. Evil Apr 24, 2002 9:32 PM | | |
| Tried one on compact.....) | Gary Apr 24, 2002 9:59 PM | | didn't work. Shimano literature also says they don't work on compact? |
| Tried one on compact.....) | kevral Apr 24, 2002 11:17 PM | | Shimano lit now seems to say that they do work on Compact.
I have an old--'95 or so--bottomswing style XTR front der on a compact crankset and it works BETTER than the new XT(well, newER) topswing I used to have. |
| I have one on compact, it works OK.... | Tom Collins Apr 25, 2002 11:30 AM | | You can get it to work but I think it takes a lot more fiddling. It really would do better on a standard drive, but if you don't mind spending the extra 10 minutes setting it up, it'll work fine on compact.
BTW I use a bottom pull, top swing (low clamp) XTR on a 22/32/42 crank. |

| Yup, XTR FD will work on compact drive..... | The Squeaky Wheel Apr 25, 2002 3:02 AM | | I'm aware that the Shimano literature does, or did as per the above post, state that the XTR FD is not compatabile with compact drive. But I have been running this setup successfully on 2 bikes without any problems. The initial setup is a bit more finicky than usual, but pay close attention to the deraileur alignment and you'll be fine.

| Tried it about a year ago.... | Gary Apr 25, 2002 5:50 AM | | on another bike and couldn't get it to stop jamming chain against big ring. Wouldn't pull it up if I remember. That's when I found lit from Shim on compact drives. |
| Bottom swing no problem - top swing 50/50 | DJS Apr 25, 2002 10:41 AM | | on the top-swing model, the inner plate will sometimes hit the middle chainring when shifting into the big ring. Seems to depend onthe ring thickness, derail height, and big ring size (42 vs 44)
Ive seen this on at least three different bikes. |
| I need top swing, so to my original question.... | Gary Apr 25, 2002 11:22 AM | | any idea on 104-64mm? Not compact and not standard. Also, running 44t.Thanks. |
| 104/64 is "compact".... | Tom Collins Apr 25, 2002 11:34 AM | | It's the same thing but with 4 arms.
Since you have a 44t big ring, you might have issues with a top swing; but it should be ok with a 42 (in my experience; see my above post). |
| I think you have answered my question and.... | Gary Apr 25, 2002 2:45 PM | | I won't drop the money to experiment. Thanks to everybody who responded. |
