What is the contribution of the length?

The shorter the stem, the quicker the steering, the longer the stem the slower the steering. And the length also determines how stretched out over the bike you are. Also, you need to consider the rise of the stem-more rise will sit you more upright. There's no set method of determining what is "right"-there's not really a "right"-it's trial and error and what feels best to you.

Also, the longer stem will put more weight on the front wheel. This should help cornering. The longer stem will help while climbing, but not be as comfortable as a short stem going downhill. It's best to experiment with several stems to determine what works best for you before investing in an expensive one.
