517s starting to show rim stress .....(6 posts)

517s starting to show rim stress .....Mango
Apr 25, 2002 1:57 AM
My new 517s are less than a month old and the eyelet cracks are already showing. I'm only 120 lbs and don't race or ride agressively. Question is: Should I chuck the rims now or is it possible to just re-tension the spokes and continue using them? Any input appreciated. Thanks.
I would contact Mavic and see what they think the cause is....arch

Maybe the problem was whoever made them overtightening the spokes, or maybe they are defective rims. Either way, they should have an idea of what's wrong.

Who built/trued your wheels??? I have 4 sets of XTR/517(ceramic) wheels. I have used them on downhill runs like last years Pedro Fest.. all over CA [Mnt. Tam, Napa] and in FL for XC racing (took 2nd in my division in the FL state mnt bike championship last Fall) and for every day training... And I have never had any problems with them. I weigh 130lbs and keep my spokes tight (I normally use DT 14/15s, but I do have a set with Ti spokes that I keep a bit tighter as they have more flex)...I build my own wheels as LBS kids normally don't have a clue and don't give a sheit if your wheel tacos during a race... If the nipples are cracking the rims after a 'few' rides... the spokes are either way too tight or so loose that only a few of the spokes are holding the tention of the wheel... find someone who knows how to build wheels and spend a few hours rebuilding a set... Then maintain your own gear. Your wheels are probably the most important factor on your bike.. taco a rim, blow a spoke and the race is over.

There have been a lot of posts on rec.bicycles.tech concerning Mavic rims and their use of anodizing. According to them the problem with anodizing a rim is that it leads to surface cracking in the aluminum in high stress areas.

Though I'm am considerably larger than you I've NEVER had a good wheel built with Mavic rims, road or mountain.

I have been professionally building wheels for about 10 years now and there are no shortages of nightmare stories about Mavic rims. There are only 2 of their rims that I will build now, the D521 and the 321Disc, that's it!! if you look under 517's on the review pages, you will find that you are not alone in your bad luck with Mavics. many, MANY people have had problems and mostly it's with cracking eyelets. It doesn't matter who builds them or what the tension or use, they just crack or wear out soon, period end of story. If Mavic will warranty them (becuase they aren't very old) which is doubtful because Mavic is still in denial, you should try and sell whatever they give you and get something decent built up.

and to the previous post who thinks that bike shop "kids" are clueless and don't give a sh*t, I think you either have the wrong shop or are talking to the wrong people. you should talk to your mechanic, get a feel for them and how long they have been doing what they do. Hard to believe, but many of us consider ourselves professionals and are proud of our work and knowledge.
