| Floor Pumps | makalu Apr 25, 2002 6:26 AM | | Hi all,
In addition to the computer, I have decided to order a floor pump. I figure hey, while nashbar is offering me a 10% discount, why not.
So, I have narrowed it down to the Topeak Joe Blow Sport pump for $28.95 on sale, or the Nashbar Blue Floor pump for $21.92 on sale.
The Nashbar pump has gotten great reviews on this site, but nothing on the Sport model of the Joe Blow.
Opinions on which one I should get???
Brand names mean nothing to me, performance does.
Oh yeah, I switch out my tires on a weekly basis, so this pump will be used a lot. Tired of using my minipump for this, and wearing it out.
THank-you much |
| Oop, also | makalu Apr 25, 2002 6:40 AM | | Chainstay guards...worth it, or lose it???
And if worth it, should I go Lizard Skin for $5.95 on sale, or Nashbar chainstay guard for $1.49 on sale.
For something this basic, I would think the Nashbar one will be fine.
Opinins?? |

I like the Lizard Skin. No more chainslap, it does its job.
I got this pump for christmas, works great.
I don't know anything about the Nashbar chainstay guard.
That's all I have to say about that. |
| From what I can tell... | makalu Apr 25, 2002 8:14 AM | | The Lizardskin attaches via velcro, the Nashbar attaches via tie clips thingies |
| Whichever one floats your boat | Drewpy Apr 25, 2002 8:21 AM | | will work fine. Hell, a clear sticker would work to protect your chainstay. You buy the Nashbar/Lizardskin to kill the noise. I think I paid $7.95 for my Lizardskin...it's been awhile though. |
| Topeak Joe Blow Sport has funky guage markings... | DaleH Apr 25, 2002 8:28 AM | | Just went through the floor pump buying process myself, (I was wearing out my mini-pump too). Actually headed to the checkout line at REI with the Joe Blow Sport and remembered a review about funky guage graduations so I took a close look right befor I entered the checkout. They are strange, make most sense in BARS (must be for euros) but if I remember right the PSI graduations go in 4 PSI increments. I turned around and got an SKS Airbase pump on sale for $9 more. It is turning out to be a great pump. Many nice features and seems to be much higher quality. |
| Yeah, wazup wit dat? | næstep Apr 25, 2002 11:41 AM | | I find that annoying, too!
| | 20 | | | | 40 | | | | 60 |
So I fill my tire to 36 instead of 35. No biggie, but I've got to pause to think about it and it's stoopid!

| Where is 30 PSI on that example??? | makalu Apr 25, 2002 1:28 PM | | Hell is I know
hahhaa |
| Tell me about it! | næstep Apr 25, 2002 4:29 PM | | To top it off, the "red zone" color bar goes from 40 to 80 psi (what's red, dangerously hot?) and the "green zone" goes from 80 to 120 psi (what's green? "OK"?)
I love the pump but the guage is as senseless as they come.

| world's cheapest and best functioning chainstay protector... | up_hiller Apr 25, 2002 9:25 AM | | is a piece of a blown inner tube or worn-out tire strapped on good 'n' tight with zipties. it does the trick.
happy trails!

| hell yeah! | Cabin Fever Apr 25, 2002 11:01 AM | | i put a set up like that on before i ever hit the trail with my 3 year old bike, and i have had next to no problems with it! 3 years old, and still have some of the original zip ties keeping snug. |
| re: Floor Pumps | Little Frog Apr 25, 2002 9:50 AM | | I don't know what bike you have but, you need to make sure you get one that fits. Lizardskins makes 3 sizes (standard, jumbo and super jumbo). I needed the jumbo. i also don't like the idea of attaching it with zip-ties. |
| Giant Rainier | makalu Apr 25, 2002 10:09 AM | | So I figure a "regular" |
| re: Floor Pumps | Jekyll Apr 25, 2002 9:51 AM | | Lots of pumps have bells and whistles, etc. The one that seems to work year in and year out without putting a hole in your wallet and allowing you to completely rebuild if necessary is Silka. Many cost more and look cooler, none work better.
Also, on the chain stay protector - for $7 its pretty hard to beat the Lizard Skins. |
| re: Floor Pumps | uber-stupid Apr 25, 2002 10:43 AM | | I haven't tried the nashbar pump, but I do have the Joe Blow myself. I can't really say anything about funky graduations on the gauge, I haven't noticed. As far as I can tell it's in PSI, and as long as I can read the numbers, I can get the pressure right. It also has a ring with an indicator on it that you can leave to mark the pressure you used last time... either to make sure both tires are the same, or to make sure the pressure is the same as it was before. It also comes with little things like needles to inflate stuff like basketballs, and a cone to use when you're inflating things like water toys, and anything else that comes with those little clear nozzles that you find on beach balls... meaning next time you have company, you can inflate the air mattress with a pump, rather than get all light-headed over it. They're minor details, and you can probably find them at a hardware store, but I figured I'd mention them.
Re: chain protectors, I've seen quite a few innertubes wrapped around chain guards... but it is ugly. One downfall of neoprene is that the chain can, over time, knock holes in it. They'll contract again, so they won't be obvious, but they'll be there. But for cheap, you can always go with electrical tape, or look around for rubber tape. It does exist, I just can't recall where to find it. But if you do go with a chainguard, you might think about getting two: one for the chainstay, and one for the top-tube, to keep your paint from getting F*cked up if you ever have to lock the bike to something. Chains can make little dings in the paint: signposts and other things can really mess it up. |
| Order placed....thanks all..... | makalu Apr 25, 2002 11:10 AM | | Got the:
Cateye Enduro 2 computer
Nashbar floorpump
all for $43 including shipping.
Gotta LOVE the internet prices.
I decided to make my own chainguard out of an old size 24 tube that I have lying around (worthless since its a 24, any my wheels are 26) |
| Good decision on the chainstay protector... | PC1 Apr 25, 2002 11:30 AM | | I've used sections of a tube I blew three years ago to make chainstay guards and there's still a two foot length of tube left. That means about four more chainstay protectors left on that old 26" tube. Just cut enough length to cover everywhere your chain slaps. My first couple were too short and about two inches of metal were still getting slapped. I used Lizard Skins once and found them to be a pain. Velcro got loose and the material starts to shred from all the pounding from the chain. I'd say my tube made protectors last about five times as long as the LizardSkin did. Your bike is gonna be so much quieter now. Keep on rollin', PC1 |
| For the pump, go MEC/Canadian... | Can't w8 Apr 25, 2002 3:30 PM | | Check out www.mec.ca and find their phone number there. They have bike parts on-line but I don't think that the floor pump is there. Anyways, phone their mail-order number and ask about it. It's $25 Canadian (which means it's like $16-17US!) + $5CDN for lifetime membership.
As for the chainguard, I have had some hockey tape on my hardtail's chainstay for about 5 years now and no probs! It's bound on both ends with electrical tape.
Top tube probs? Get a Core Rat Top Tube Protector. You can also wrap a pump and a spare tube in it! 4 velco strips can be adapted to any size top tube. Roach pads are okay too!
Good luck,
Can't w8 |
