Every fly with a bike?, Use a hard sided case or not, is it free or extra to bring it on the plane?

A hard-sided case is not mandatory but it is a good idea if you do it a lot. If you don't plan on flying with it very often, go to a bike shop and ask for one of their bike boxes. Pack it up real good and go with that.

As far as price, of course, it's extra. Each airline is different so call around if you have that flexibility. One thing that may help you out is if you are an IMBA member your bike flys free on certain airlines (with restrictions).

Oh yeah, one more thing. If you're certain of your destination (nont international) you may want to look into UPS'ing your bike to a LBS. Probably the cheapest option. The only problem with that is that you will need to ship the bike about a week ahead of time and wait for it to be shipped back. Of course, there are considerations to be made with shipping it such as lost or damaged items.

A guy I know has a friend who flys all over with his bike. He keeps it in the hard case, but has a little trick which helps him out with the cost. Pick up one of those little blue and white handicap stickers, and put that on your case where it can clearly be seen.

He says that he very rarely is charged for taking it or asked what is in it. If they ask him he tells them it's a bike, but otherwise they just assume it's a wheelchair and don't charge him extra.

It might be worth a try anyway...
