| Poll: Bike waxing! | Mr. Waffle Apr 25, 2002 3:42 PM | | Was just wondering what everyone uses to give their bike a nice shine.
I have always used plain old turtle wax car wax on my painted frames. Is it a good choice for my new Al Annodized frame as well? |

| 3m liquid wax is a good product and not too expensive... | arch Apr 25, 2002 6:39 PM | | I use it on my car's wheels. I use Meguiar's Medallion on the car. Another alternative would be Meguiar's gold class. Any of these products will last a good amount of time - around 3 months on a car.

| On painted frames I use... | BCRider Apr 25, 2002 7:36 PM | | ... Eagle One. Or at least I seem to recall that as the name. It's the stuff in a black bottle with a red car on the label. Works great and seems to make the finish slippery (it says it has teflon on the label)so dirt and stains don't stick very well.
For anodized frames I wouldn't want to use anything that comes out of the bottle looking milky (like the Eagle One). The milky waxes actually have a very fine polishing abrasive in them to help smooth the finish. Using this type on an anodized frame with the rougher texture will guarantee that you get a buildup of the material in the surface and get a cloudy and splotchy look to the finish.
For ano'd frames I'd try some of the clear spray on finishes that are recomended for rubber and plastics. These don't build up like a wax does and certainly won't result in the cloudy look that the abrasive bearing cream waxes will cause. The benifits of slippery surfaces should still apply when it comes time for washing. For darker colors I'd try TurtleWax Black Chrome. It comes out a with a light blackish tint but for thin layers this won't show. |
| Lemon Pledge works good. nm | Locoman Apr 26, 2002 5:17 AM | | . |
| Have used it before on my Moots.... | Mr. Waffle Apr 26, 2002 7:08 AM | | ...since that was the recommended wax in the the Moots owner's manual.
Interestingly enough, the YBB owner's manual also recommends Lemon Pledge (among other things) for lubing the rear shock.
While LP gives a good shine, I have found that Turtle Wax holds up a little better. |
