Frame creaking, scaring the crap outa me!!(12 posts)

Frame creaking, scaring the crap outa me!!Russ
Apr 25, 2002 4:16 PM
I have an 01' Stumpjumper Comp, and whenever I pedal, the bike starts to click, it clicks several times every pedal stroke. I do not believe it's the pedals, because it seems to be coming from the frame. Has anyone else had a problem with this on a Stumpjumper or any bike? How have you fixed it? I just don't know what it is, it's been happening for a while now. Am I in danger of cracking the frame or anything?

Take the pedals off and try it first...

More than likely, its...Fat-tire

Your seat post, either at the collar or your seat. Get some grease (Phil Woods perhaps) and apply, and tighten. Don't be afraid to add some pressure, but don't over tighten either.

If that's not it, it could be the cranks. Make sure they are tighten.

If you have a torque wrench, find out what the recommended torque for these three areas are.

If still creaks, it, god forbid, could be a cracked frame, but not likely. If none of this works though, I'd look for a crack at all the welds.

I doubt it's the frame, but it's easy enough to check. Just inspect all the welds very carefully (clean the bike first) and anything that looks like a crack or chip in the paint should be inspected. If you see something that looks like a crack near a weld, chip some paint away (if it's anodized you don't need to do this but I don't know what finish comes on those bikes) or sand it down to inspect further.

More than likely it's a part on the bike making this noise.

Start by removing the seatpost and apply some grease to it. Then grease the rails of the saddle where they connect to the seatpost clamp. Both of these areas are notorious for causing squeeks. After doing that if the noise hasn't gone away, pull your cranks off and remove the bottom bracket. Thoroughly clean the BB shell and cups, and reinstall. Apply some teflon tape to the threads as this can also help silence tricky BB squeaks. Finally, replace your cranks and snug up to proper torque.

IT could also be a problem in your rear freewhell mechanism. Swap wheels with a buddy and see if it still does it then.

Good luck.

It could be the cables tapping the frame while you're riding.DCS

I've had clicking sounds caused by cables on a couple of bikes. Took me a little while to figure our this simple explanation. Try zip tying them to the frame.

I feel your pain!!
I too have '01 stumpy comp fsrxc.
Now this frame seems to have problem on the junction where top/ head tube meets. That's where that creaking is coming from.
One guy I met who had 2000 stumpy told me he had the same problem and the LBS got him a new frame.
So I took my bike to the LBS where I bought the bike, they put some light oil ( limseed oil or something like that) into the top bottle cage bolt hole and move around the frame in all directions for couple of minutes.
This fixed the creaking.
But I still think that the frame creaking should be handled as a warrenty frame replacement since this remedy is NOT a routine bike maintenance
esp. for a bike which cost almost two grand.
hope this helps.

My money is on the bottom Bracket...

Same problem here. THe BB is tight but I think I need to throw some teflon tape on thte threads. I might just let it creak away though

You could also try the crankarm bolts.

I've had that noise (on a Stumpy, too) when the cable ferrules were doing something in their stops. Light oil on the ferrules fixed it.
It's in the head tube...robbz27

I had a pro w/ the same problem. Went through 2 frames before I got it figured out.

Basically, the tubing is so thin in those M4 frames (that's why it's so light) that when the downtube was welded to the head tube, a lot of times there were voids in the welds because if they used too much welding material it would scorch the tubing. As you hammer on the bike, the flex of the thin tubing allows for the tubes at the junction to rub together and make a creaing sound. Because of the aluminum frame, the sound is reverberated through the tubing and it sound slike a creaky BB.

Here's the fix...Put bike in stand and remove H2O cage braze on on downtube. rotate the bike so it's pointing straight down and spray tri-flow into the braze-on hole. Allow the lube to drip down to the head tube, move it around if you can to get a good coating and let it sit for an hour or more to make sure it penetrates. That should solve the problem.

I sold mine as soon as the rep told me this. Lube isn't a good fix for a creak on a $1500 bike. THat's just my opinion.

Good luck!
Creaking on my GF was from loosened chainring bolts. Check thoseLocomotomarc

Pedals?Albert

In my experience its almost impossible to determine what is causing clicking sounds by just listening. I greased the threads on the bottom bracket, used teflon tape, greased all the chainring bolts, replaced the bottom bracket with a new one (not all at once) and still a clicking sound when pedaling. I put grease on the pedal threads and no more click. Seatposts and the rails on the saddle can also make the noise. Good luck.

Recently had same problem. My frame was making all kinds of cracking/popping noises. It turned out to be the BBracket. I tightened it and within 50 miles was doing the same thing. Locktite finally cured the problem. I don't know if the experienced riders recomend Locktite on the BB but the damn thing wouldn't stay in there.
