| I broke it!! :( | Skyssx May 18, 2002 3:31 PM | | I bought a new 99 specialized hard rock from the dealer in town two months ago. A week later I bought a trans-X seat post. Trans-X doesn't have seat posts in 30.9mm so the dealer used a 26.0mm and shimmed it. I have been riding it hard on the mountains of southern arizona for the rest of the two months. Last sunday I crashed at 35 mph going around a corner, the bike and I flew about 20 feet before I finally fell off. The only place the bike hit the ground was the seat and the trans-x was all wobbly despite tightening the adjustment screws. I decided to get a 30.9 thudbuster since I was already ordering some shimano PD959s. When I got the thudbuster I overjoyed until I tried to put it on the bike. It would NOT fit and I scratched up about 5mm on the bottom of the post trying to make it fit. I took it to the dealer the next day and they couldn't make it fit either. They tried a 30.8 rigid post and even with a hammer they could only get it in an inch. The 30.9 thudbuster fit perfectly in all the specialized bikes on their showroom floor. This is where my question comes in. Specialized steel frames have a life time warranty. I would feel like a HUGE dick if I asked the shop to replace my bike as they are extremely nice guys. Do you think specialized would replace my frame? If so would they deal with me directly so I don't screw the shop? Thanks. |

| The LBS tried putting it in with a HAMMER??? | Skyssx May 19, 2002 12:56 PM | | I should clarify. They were using a large cold chisel trying to spread the clamp ring apart, it *looked* like it may have been bent. However that didn't work. They didn't try to use a hammer on the thudbuster and I don't think they tried to use one on the 30.8 they were using. |
| ummmmm.....is the shim still stuck in the seatpost?(nt) | rufus May 18, 2002 5:57 PM | | nt |
| ummmmm.....is the shim still stuck in the seatpost?(nt) | Skyssx May 19, 2002 12:55 PM | | No, the shim came out easily. |
| re: I broke it!! :( | TechniKal May 18, 2002 6:00 PM | | The steel Specialized I have uses a 30.4mm seatpost, not a 30.9mm. The aluminium frames use the 30.9. |
| re: I broke it!! :( | Skyssx May 19, 2002 12:54 PM | | No, this one had a 30.9 originally, I confirmed it with another steel HR pro model. |
