| Future Drivetrains? | DM9 May 18, 2002 6:44 PM | | What do you think future drivetrains will be like? Sitting here looking at my bike it just seems deraileurs and cassettes won't be around forever. There has to be something better. I always visualize gears inside the rear hub and BB with a drivetrain similar to a truck differential eliminating cassettes, chains and cranks. |
| predicting the future's pointless. | RVM May 18, 2002 7:32 PM | | look at those flying cars from the 50's and 60's that were predicted for today. where are they? |
| not if there's working designs | Seb May 18, 2002 9:08 PM | | There never was any working prototype for those flying cars- they were speculative.
Predicting need not be specialtive. There's good deigns for geared bikes out there. One engeneer I've communicated with says his design weighs about the same as a chain system, allows continous variable range of over 1000% percent, would cost less than $200, would be compatable with current bottom brakets, and would be as durable as a Rholoff hub (same warrenty). When he gets them to beta, I'm buying. |
| Rohloff...... | Dave in Md. May 19, 2002 3:19 AM | | It's a bit heavier than the std.derailleur set-up, but it already exists and eliminates the derailleur. Have only read about it, but sound real promising, don't know why it isn't more popular. |
| Rohloff...... | DM9 May 19, 2002 6:42 AM | | After 5 minutes at the Rohloff websight I lusted for one of those hubs until I saw the price. If they could get down to $500 I'd sacrifice the dough. |
| BELT DRIVE | John May 19, 2002 4:23 AM | | Sealed belt drive, or shaft drive with a lightweight carbon/titanium drive tube, sealed transmission. An automatic tranny on a bike would suck, I would never buy one. I WANT to pick my gear ratio!!
BUT let me finish ny saying, WHO NEEDS 9 SPEEDS???? I wish I had a 7 speed rear, and two speed front, with only a couple of redundant gear ratios. |
| Hydraulic Drive... | næstep May 19, 2002 5:46 AM | | ...with a variable speed tranny through fluid porting.
Wouldn't it be funny if I still rode with cable actuated discs, though?

| enclosed chain/self adjusting | Ridenour May 19, 2002 6:51 AM | | A working sealed system would be the biggest advancement in mtn. bikes since suspension. The problem with belt/shaft/hub gearing is the increase in drag from deflection and other forces.
With modern composites the weight would be minimal from an enclosed system. No more cleaning chains, dropping chains, geek marks and a longer lasting system to boot!!!! |
