Gritty deore derailler. what do i do??Aaron

hey,
my derailler is giving problems on the down shift, i think its because of grit in the pulleys, and pivots. How would i go about cleaning it? ideally without taking it off my bike
brush it off with a brush or the tip of a flat head screwdriver.RVM

u can use a degreaser too if it's really dirty. But make sure to lube the pivots after the degreaser dries out...
works for me.....Dave in Md.

it's one good use for WD-40 that I've found. Many here say never use it, but I've not had a problem. The long tube which comes with the can makes it ideal for getting at hard to reach pivots. First, I use a toothbrush and soap and water to get the worst off, then gently rinse off. Then I'll use the WD-40 and use the tube to get right to the pivot points to make sure they're good and clean. Let it all evaporate overnight, then go back & be sure to lube it all again real good-as WD-40 does act like a degreaser, and if you don't re-lube everything real good, then you'll ruin what you've just tried to clean. I've been doing this for quite a while and my drivetrain works perfectly and haven't ruined anything yet. Just be sure to not to get any WD near the hub-don't want to get it into anything you can't easily re-lube.

you probably already know this, but don't use WD-40 as a lubricant.
It actually works as a de-greaser.
Take it off the bikeJohn

If it's really that gritty and dirty, the bushings of the jockey pulleys may be totally worn out, allowing dirt to get into the bushings (most rear derailluers have at least one bushing in a jockey pulley). Removing and a thorough cleaning will improve the action of it. You may even opt for new jockey pulleys, they are rebuildable.
After cleaning and adjusting, if you still have shift problems, a close inspection of the chain and cassette is in order. Ghost shifts can be caused by worn components
