Air or coil forks, pro and cons? (4 posts)
| Air or coil forks, pro and cons? | Spice May 19, 2002 8:34 AM | | Hi
I am looking to get a set of suspension forks.
What are the advantages and disadvanteds of an air spring over a coil spring?
Many thanks in advance

Check out the revies on this site, that will give a lot of input from many riders about a fork they have riden.
Air:
pro:
usually lighter (no coil spring)
almost infinite adjustment because of air "spring"
con:
need to get an air pump for shock, and need to bring it with
you on your rides
usaully not as long lasting and can be higher maintinence (so
i've heard)
not always the best feel
Coil:
pro:
usually a really good feel
low maintinece
no need for a shock pump
Con:
a bit heavier
not as ajustable, with most forks you can change oil weight,
spring wieght
Biased:
I've been using a Marzocchi z2 atom 80 for 2-3 years, I've had it rebuilt twice. This most recent time i've put a different weight oil in there. The ride is super plush and a blast to ride. i'm 145lbs agressive xc rider, in a dry climate.
what forks are you looking at?
what is your weight and riding style?
are you hard on your bike equipment?
what kind of weather do you have?
most of those are important questions you should consider too, and i'm sure there could be more. Sorry for all the misspellings |
| Really no need to bring a shock pump with you on rides... | AndyH May 19, 2002 12:51 PM | | ...unless you're trying to determine the proper air pressure. Other than that I agree with your assessment. In addition, I had been riding nothing but coil forks for the last 6-7 years (Rock Shox and then Marzocchi's) but recently made the switch to a Fox Forx Float (i.e., Air) 100RLC and couldn't be more pleased with this fork. Very plush for an air fork...feels as plush as my old coil Marzocchi's. |
| re: Air or coil forks, pro and cons? | SpongeDog Squarepants May 20, 2002 5:28 AM | | I ride hard with my air shocks and typically check the pressure before every 3rd ride. I have yet to find the pressure has gone down, and I have never needed to bring the shockpump with me.
The only time you really need to use it is when you change your riding weight around. |
