I want to take an old rigid fork out of my old trek which has a 1" threaded headtube and put in a threadless suspension fork, is there anything else I'd need to buy other than a new headset and stem?

Nope, except maybe a star fangled nut and spacers, and...Fat-tire

V Brakes or cantilevers???næstep

If your bike is old enough that you still have center pull cantilever brakes, you'll need to upgrade to V brakes or a front disc. Unless, that is, you get your hands on a 1" suspension fork with a brake cable hanger on the brake arch, such as an old Judy or a RST281 (those are the two most common that I see).

I just made this switch on my wife's 1994 Trek 830. Turned out pretty nice. I chose a 1" Bomber from Phat Tire, a 1" FSA Orbit XLII stem (that does come with a Conix in place of a star nut & top cap), and a funky 40 degree rise stem with a shim to make it fit the 1" steerer.

I also replaced the XT V brakes (from an earlier upgrade) with a Formula Activa mechanical disc up front. It's a pretty kick-ass bike now, and the steel frame is going to last longer than I want it to.

Have fun!
