| my ass is killin | sore butt Jun 15, 2002 6:44 AM | | Hello,
I finally got my bike outfitted. Its a steel Ibis Mojo, Bomber fork, Propel wheels, and xt and xtr everything.
Went yesterday for the first ride. And OMG my butt hurts.
Can some please recommend a good seat for XC riding. I need padding. Im a wimp.
Thanks |
| re: Time....... | Jrm Jun 15, 2002 7:09 AM | | The ride isnt going to be to comfy the fist time around. Give your A$s some time to get used to the bike. Carry some tools with your and make seat and bar adjustments as you ride. |
| re: Time....... | DIRTJUNKIE Jun 15, 2002 9:31 AM | | One more thing when you make adjustment's to the seat and bar's as you ride make sure to stop while making these adjustments. |

| re: my ass is killin | Jfunk Jun 15, 2002 7:50 AM | | Do not, I repeat, Do not go out and buy a "Padded" seat. These things are marketed to help make your riding more comfortable, but all they do is make things worse in the long run. They are squichy, get torn easily and are in general not good. What you need is time. Ride more, ride your favorite places, forget about your butt. In about 1 week all will be good and you won't go throught this "adjustment" period again.
Now this is totally different than other parts of your anatomy, if "they" go numb, this is a seriousissue and you should try a saddle with a cut out. I am a big fan of the Terry Fly.

| I 2nd the fly | tlg Jun 17, 2002 3:58 AM | | I just got a Fly 2 weeks ago and love it. The seat that came with my bike was somewhat soft and padded. On long rides it really became a pain in the ass (literally). Since I put on the Fly, I don't even realize I've got a saddle under me. |
| Don't forget the shorts... | slayerbob Jun 15, 2002 12:40 PM | | ...without the tidy-whitties. TW's will give serious butt sores so get a pair of padded bike shorts and wear those. Helps a bit. |
| Don't forget the shorts... | DIRTJUNKIE Jun 15, 2002 1:40 PM | | I agree 100% about the padded shorts they are more important that a good seat. But it takes some trial and errer to get the right seat and the adjustment right.Like someone else said time in the saddle is important also to get your a$$ used too it. |
| Don't forget to make sure nose of saddle is high enough...... | Buzz Jun 15, 2002 3:24 PM | | Sometimes I get sores if saddle nose is not just high enough so my weight is distributed evenly on length of the seat. If you go to high with the nose you will feel excessive pressure in (that area). Too low and you will not get that snug feel. A micro adjust post is nice to get it right for you to. I never get a sore behind persay, just saddle sores from bad seat fit. Hope this helps. |

| first try time and padded shorts, then new seat | Scott F Jun 16, 2002 6:47 PM | | I agree with previous posts that you probably just need some time on the bike. And it seems like any *dult needs padded shorts. (My three teenagers don't seem to need padded shorts, but they only weigh 80# to 135#). For the ultimate in padded shorts check to see if Performance still has a 2 for price of 1 sale on their bibs with 0.5 cm thick gel pad.
If your butt still hurts get a new seat. I like the Italia flite. In a seat it seems like quality is more important than padding. |
