| Bike trailer | JJHACK Jun 16, 2002 11:54 AM | | Hey folks I need a trailer for my 5 month old son. I have a Rocky mountain Element with Disc Brakes and wonder if anyone has an idea for a kids bike trailer for use with disc brakes? I need this thing quick I'm dying to ride but have to bring the little guy along with me. Thanks |
| Some Ideas | Font Jun 16, 2002 12:05 PM | | We bought an regular single axle trailer and we use old Thule and Yakima racks bolted to the floor of the trailer. However, I don't suggest that for you. From what I understand, you're trying to carry two bikes on a trailer. If this is indeed the case, try this site:

We use those products as well on our trailer and they work very well. This way, if your bike and your son's bike both have dropouts, which is most likely true, you can just take the front wheels off, stick them in the car, and put the bikes on the trailer together. | You need to wait.... | johnny blaze Jun 16, 2002 12:24 PM | | 5 mos. old is way too young for a trailer. Your son needs to develop his neck muscles first and be able to support his own head before you even consider doing this. Also the baby's brain has yet to attach and many babies have died from being shaken. I'd wait till at least 1 1/2 years.

| Agree 100%, don't do it..... | Ventanarama Jun 16, 2002 12:33 PM | | Your son's safety is much more important than the fact that you're jonesing to go for a ride. Bare minimum is 1 year old for most kids to be able to ride safely in a trailer, longer for many.

| A bit off track of the question! | JJHACK Jun 16, 2002 12:50 PM | | What trailer will work with a disc brake I understand the details you wrote about but I still will need a trailer. I respect your opinions and understand your point but the time will come and I need a trailer. As far as 1-1/2 years old? well Again I respect your opinion but it's far different then mine, My wife's and her parents who are both Doctors. Babys are put in joggers and run with the mom on a regular basis. Consider there are plenty of differences in riding. No infant should be bounced down single track. However there are countless blacktop and packed gravel trails which are no different then a stroller in a shopping mall. Please don't misunderstand and think I'm disrespectful just try and stay on the topic for me. |
| cycletote.com has em | johnny blaze Jun 16, 2002 4:05 PM | | They are seatpost mounted which is about the only option you have if using rear disc's. The only seatpost mounted trailer I've seen and it's pricey at $415 for the family model. Hope this helps =)

| Burley's the ticket..... | Ventanarama Jun 16, 2002 8:43 PM | | Burley not only makes the best trailers, but they also have an alternative attachment for bikes that don't work with their normal one. Works fine with full suspension bikes, disc brakes, etc. For what it's worth every major trailer manufacturer recomends 1 year old as the minimum starting age.

| Currently using an Adams Silhouette... | El Jester Jun 17, 2002 5:54 AM | | That I began using when my son was 10 months old. It had alot of the same features of the Burley but was much less $$$.
It works fine on my Azonic w/ disc brakes. The mount is low profile and has plenty of clearance for the 6" rotor I use. I also got the "stroller/jogger" conversion kit for it which works great for outdoor events where the paths are not too smooth and pushing a regular stroller is difficult.
