lx vs xtsburke

Your thoughts on LX vs XT drive train would be appreciated (cost vs dependability vs weight vs etc...). Also can I adapt a 7 speed cassette to a 8/9 speed hub? Thank you in advance. Scott

I've used both over the years, and for the most part I can't tell much of a difference. A year or 2 ago I would have definitely recommended XT shifters over LX, but find that now that gap is very small. About the only thing that I would definitely recommend for XT over LX is the cassette, because of the weight savings. As for the hub issue, as far as I know there is no way to mount an 8 or 9 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub because of the different spacing.
I agree with jcw except for one thing.RVM

LX and XT are pretty darn close performance wise. XT just gives you bit lighter (except for the cassette which is quite a lot) and bit more durable parts.

you can add a spacer on your hub to fit a 7 speed cassette on a 8/9 hub.
oops, mis-read that one (nm)jcw
