hey, just moved back to BC from Ontario and have been getting my butt kicked on pretty much every ride i go on. I ride a 2001 sugar 2 with a manitou mars fork and have been finding that i've been go over the front a lot on technical rocky downhills (very, very bad), i wouldn't have minded except that i cleared them all the time on my specialized hardrock last summer. i find the manitou mars goes through all it's travel far too quickly, resulting in my weight being too far forward. I've increased the air presssure well above what it says for my weight, however the fork still feels too soft. Does anyone have any cures.... should i get the heavier spring kit for my fork or do you think a riser bar would be a good idea? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. i weigh 155lbs
which mars model do you have?RVM

The Mars Elite is a air/coil combo. Air for main and coil for negative. And I'm not sure you can change those springs.

Having moved from Ontario to BC, here's a couple of thoughts I've got:

1) Pilot error: it's steeper and rootier and harder out here in BC. Mistakes are about as easy as it gets no margin for error.

2) Get a stem no longer than 80mm, get at least a 1" riser, 2" is best, assuming it fits you and your style.

3) Consider a 100mm fork or more

4) Put your saddle down to the frame on descents, getcher @$$ behind the saddle, and when it's really steep, your butt and personal parts should be shining the rear tire.

5) Practice a bit, it's different out here.

5a) dunno the Manitou fork, but most riders here you'll find on oil Marzocchis, for a very good reason... they work, don't break and soak up the hits that are throwing you.

Good luck, Jim

Had a very similar problem when I switched from a hartail to fs my fork (marrazocchi air fork, but the princeple is the same). I found that by adjusting the rebound to be slower it resulted in much better performance since the fork wasn't rebounding so quick and kicking me off the bike. Maybe this will help.
