does anyone know if the new deore xt rear derailleur is compatible with an 8 speed system? Do they even have shifters for it? or do i have to go through with the 9 speed conversion? I need a new derailleur/shifter, any advice?

The derailleur will work just fine, but as far as I know Shimano only makes the STX shifters in 8 speed. Sram is also making 8 speed trigger shifters now, so you do have options if you want to stay with 8 spd.

you can use the new 9 spd rear XT with an 8 speed shifter. and if you hurry, I think jensonusa.com still has some old 8 spd XT shifters for around $50.

Right now Jenson has XT 8 speed shift pods for $52. I have my little stockpile of XTR pods, and would recommend scooping up a couple of XT sets from Jenson while the gettin's good. Long live 8 speed (yeah right..)!!

well if you are going to end up buying shifters u might as well upgrade to 9 spd seeing shifters are the most expensive part. I bought the deore lx 9spd OEM shifters from supergo for 29 dollars and have loved them. the cassette and rear derrailuer are not that expensive.

Yes, the current 9 speed XT rear derailur will work on an 8 speed system. I run one myself. Shimano's website has a good breakdown of mixing 8 and 9 speed components.

I think Jenson USA has some 8 speed shifters in stock. http://www.jensonusa.com/store/dept/shifters.asp

However, if I was shelling out the $$ for new shifters and derailurs, I'd spend a few more bucks and take the plunge into the 9 speed world. An LX drivetrain shouldn't run more than $120 via mail order.
