I just got a new car that came with a roof rack (round cross bars). I previously drove a minivan and could easily fit 2 or 3 bikes in the back and not have to take out a seat. So I would like to be able to put at least 2 if not 3 bike on top of the new car (both mt and road). The problem is I don't have $300 to spend on roof racks. Can any one suggest a cheap but good bike rack? It has to locking and be very secure (I go on long trips with my bike). I am more worried about the security of the bike then the price of the rack.
I think Thule and Yakima...Fat-tire

normally have trays that can be used with the current cross bars. Check with the dealer, or even try going on Thule or Yakima's site. You should be able to tell if you actually need to buy the hole rack (but I'm guessing you don't).

As for security, you can get fork mounted trays that lock the fork to the tray.

For a cheap alternative if you have to get a new rack, look at Performance Bikes XSport racks. You can get a refurbished one for I think under $200 (or maybe less, go to performancebike.com). I have the fork mounted trays, and I was able to get a couple of Yakima fork lock cores (about $40 each), and lock the fork to the tray.
