| Does travel affect # of pinch flats | krackerpop Jul 12, 2002 7:31 PM | | I just got a s-works fsr bike and the rear travel is about an inch less than my old enduro. I have gotten 3 pinch flats in the last 2 weeks going over curbs. During my 3 years with my enduro, I had only one pinch flat. My question is whether travel directly affects the vulnerability to pinch flats. |
| why yes, it does, but there are other factors. | Kitchenware Jul 12, 2002 8:03 PM | | I was on a Superlight for a year and flatted like every other ride, went to a Chameleon and I have yet to flat on the trail. *looks for wood to knock on* Maybe it's because I can run a normal size tire back there now though instead of that 2.1 poo.

| No, not really | third day Jul 12, 2002 8:09 PM | | Depending on the geometry of your suspension linkage, it might make a slight difference how your rear wheel moves when impacting a curb-like object. But I hardly think this would cause appreciably more pinch flats Are you using the same rim and tire and tube? |
| different tires and tubes | krackerpop Jul 12, 2002 10:42 PM | | I am using a high pressure 125 kevlar bead Hutchinson Python 2.1 tires with cheap 147gr Giant 1.75-2.5 tires on my current setup. I used to have specialized team tires with a specialized tube. Both designs are roughly the same. The s-works is more race specific but the old enduro was not as radical of a change compared the the fsrxc bikes in 1999. I am wondering whether I should go back to the enduro. The pinch flats are really pissing me off. |
| your post confuses me... | jcw Jul 13, 2002 6:32 AM | | First off I would say that travel can affect pinch flat vulnerability; generally speaking any fs bike is going to be less vulnerable than a hardtail, but I'd be suprised if going from a 4" to 3" travel bike would have much, if any, effect. Anywho, the Pythons are designed to be run with a very low (not high) pressure, around 35 psi. Also they are definitely a lightweight XC specific tire. If you're having problems then try switching the rear to something a little beefier, like a WTB mutanoraptor 2.4 (or 2.24) |
| a simple solution | Cosmo Jul 14, 2002 5:47 AM | | Parish the thought but have you tried a good pump and 5 MORE PSI????
Me thinks you're thinking too much. It's not the amount of travel but the overall spring rate. The less travel, the stiffer the overall rate (a 4 inch travel bike is squishier than a hardtail, right?) which requires a little more air pressure. Now I'm thinking too much. |
