| What's so special about Chris King headsets? | Lou S Jul 12, 2002 9:04 PM | | Give me some insight here guys. They're pretty expensive for a headset, what's the deal?
Would it be worth upgrading my stock 2000 Enduro FSR Comp headset if nothing is wrong?
Thanks for any help.

| If/when yours stock headset breaks... | PiroChu Jul 12, 2002 10:12 PM | | I have a '99 FSRxc. After 2 seasons, when I changed/upgraded my
front fork (from a busted Mars to a nice Marzocchi), I "had to" replace my broken stock Specialized headset to Chris King.
Don't have any prob my headset now (or the fork, either, of course).
I'd replace/upgrade when your stock headset goes.
Chances are, it will. Then, that'll be a good time to go for a Chris King headset. Until then, keep on riding hard. ;-) |

Sorry, instead of what I wrote above, I actually meant to say that,
"...I had to replace my stock Specialized headset, too, because it was
broken then, and my trusted LBS suggested to go with a Chris King
because it's so tough & well-made that it'll last for a long time for me."
It's the 2nd season w/ the CK headset now, so far, and no problem at all... :-) |
| You get what you pay for... | Dirt Pilot Jul 13, 2002 4:43 AM | | ...A couple of years ago I broke a Race Face Real Seal headset...about 75 bucks worth, I replaced it with a CK...100 bucks worth. I'v had no problems in that area since then. Well worth the extra 25 bucks if you ask me. |
| Tolerances... | næstep Jul 13, 2002 6:19 AM | | Whether it's worth it or not is up to your wallet. The only reason I haven't "bought in" to CK headsets yet is the other various brands I use haven't let me down.
So what's the deal? They've picky about their tolerances. They make their own bearings, for instance. And where most cartridge bearings simply drop into the cups, theirs are pressed due to an interference fit with the cup, to keep them from moving around. Same for the cups themselves they are held to very tight dimensions. CK even sells reamers to get your head tube to the right size. All these tight tolerances take "slop" out of the equation. No slop makes for a long-lived, tight, smooth component.

| 10 year warranty... | slayerbob Jul 13, 2002 7:31 AM | | ...was one of the appeals to me. If you think about it, if you buy a $30 headset and replace it every two years, you'll end up paying more for headsets then if had stuck with a CK from the beginning. That's a VERY simplistic look at it however; there are numerous other things that would factor in in the real world. I haven't received mine yet so I'll see how it goes. |
| Use a King and forget about your headset | Sheedy Jul 13, 2002 1:39 PM | | I have used 2 or 3 different brands of headsets and found that after a couple of weeks I always had to re-adjust them after they developed some kind of play.Get the King, put it on your bike and you'll never have to touch it again, unless you want to swap it on to your next bike in 5 years time.A great product that you can depend on. |
| they work! | AlphaDog Jul 13, 2002 8:35 PM | | My King headset is 6 years old and now on its 3rd bike. The headset still feels like brand new. Best part I have ever bought for my bike hands down. |
