advice for travelling 700miles with bikes on rack?split

I'm taking off to Colorado to do some camping and biking. This will be the first time with 2 bikes on my Yakima hitch rack. Is there any advice out there from people who've done long distance travelling with bikes on a this type of rack? My bikes are pretty high-end and I'd hate to have anything happen to them. Thanks.

I would not recommend traveling that distance with your bikes on a rack. I did this once and ended up with a nice dent in my downtube from something flying through the air!I now have a van and my bike stays safe inside.I would try to cover your bikes somehow, maybe you could tape hot water pipe insulation on your bikes tubes or something?-good luck.
Have 15K+ miles on Yakima Mo Joe, no damage so far....Drew

I just added a couple of bungee cords, along with a cable lock.
We did a 1700+ mile trip two summers ago, with a stretch of driving from Reno to Fruita in the middle of August. We drive a Ford Focus, a pretty low profile car and have never had anything hit our bikes.

We've just did another 1000+ mile trip from SoCal to Eureka/Arcata with no issues at all! Just go, it's a mountain bike....I'd worry more about crash damage while riding than damage during transport..!
just secure everything wellcm

I've driven across the country multiple times with two bikes on my roof rack, and other than scraping a million bugs off them when I arrived, they were no worse for the wear. If you can create some type of cover to keep them clean and protected great - otherwise, just make sure everything is secure and check it when you stop.
