| cutting steerer tube | JimS Jul 13, 2002 11:20 AM | | which do you recommend for cutting a steerer tube: a) hacksaw with guide, b) pipe cutter (the one the clamps onto the tube and rotates around it)? |
| Either is an option... | næstep Jul 13, 2002 1:31 PM | | I prefer the pipe cutter. It's easier, it stays straight, and it's just all-around less prone to screwing up. But if you use a cheap cutter, or force the cut too quickly, you can deform the steerer and cause it to "mushroom" inside.
I've used a hacksaw once or twice. It gives a cleaner cut, and gives the ability to be more precise, but I've had hacksaws get away from me before (thankfully not on steerer tubes) and eat into the side of the miter box. The extra precision of the cut really isn't needed for a good install.

| I just did it with a pipe cutter | Steve from JH Jul 13, 2002 2:44 PM | | It was my first time cutting a steerer tube. It worked perfectly. Be patient and only tighten the cutter very gradually. |
| Me too | lemmy999 Jul 13, 2002 3:07 PM | | I used a pipe cutter on a threadless and years ago used a saw for a threaded. The pipe cutter was really easy. But even if you are careful, it will mushroom out just a little. But it was just enough to notice, not enough to matter. |
| Be careful with manitou | ChazMan Jul 14, 2002 1:40 PM | | Be careful with magnesium steerer tubes and pipe cutters. Too much pressure and the tube will splinter vertically. The stuff is not like steel, it is more like ceramic when you put sharp pressure on it. I'd go hacksaw, or be very patient with the pipe cutter. |
| "<i>Magnesium Steerer</i>"??? Which fork has that? (nm) | næstep Jul 14, 2002 3:49 PM | | |
| Bzzzzt Wrong! But thanks for playing... | DeeEight Jul 14, 2002 4:02 PM | | NOBODY uses magnesium for steerer tubes. Its used for fork slider castings, stems, frames and rear swingarm linkages only. |
| Bzzzzt Wrong! But thanks for playing... | Alex Tribek Jul 14, 2002 8:38 PM | | My X-vert super has a mag steerer. I cut it with a pipe cutter. Looks like I just won the daily double. |
| That's an Aluminium steerer! | DeeEight Jul 14, 2002 9:35 PM | | Not magnesium. Try again. |
| Dremel! | Matno Jul 15, 2002 4:09 AM | | It does everything! I've cut two steerers with no problems with mine. Just put tape around the tube to act as a guide, then cut away with an extra heavy duty cutting wheel. That way, when you're done you can polish the sharp edges off. Works perfectly. Long live the mighty Dremel!!!
Oh, and Manitou definitely did not make an X-vert Super with a magnesium steerer. I've got a non-standard one with an alloy steerer though, and it's a great fork! (Non-standard in that it has the alloy steerer but not a hyperlite crown. I actually ordered steel steerer so I was pretty happy when it arrived). |
