| Looking for the best cheap cranks... | jared Jul 13, 2002 12:08 PM | | maybe 50-150 dollars. For everything (XC, some fun all-around stuff, but nothing crazy) I'm looking for something light and cheap to replace my current setup, a Bontrager Select crank w/ square taper LP27 BB. I'll have to buy a new splined bottom bracket, so i don't want to spend everything on the cranks. Can I get good shifting with anything other than shimano? |

| re: Looking for the best cheap cranks... | lemmy999 Jul 13, 2002 3:05 PM | | A Truvativ Firex SL 650gm for $50 at Performance right now. It is a $100 crankset. I don't know how good it is yet because mine won't get here until Monday. They come in splined (ISIS) and square taper. I got a new FSA Ultimax Xtreme Ti bottom bracket. I am loosing 110grams on the crankset (old one was a Sugino) and $150 on the BB. The BB was $90 from Speedgoat. So total cost was $140. If you don't want to pay for the light Ti you can cut the cost of the BB in half and gain only about 50-75 grams. |
| No question, LX Hollowtech hands-down... | næstep Jul 13, 2002 5:03 PM | | If you can get them for the right price, that is.
The LX is essentially the XT minus a few features:
* They use a 6000 series alloy instead of the 7000 series alloy of the XT. I confess, I don't know where this difference shows up, since my LX crankarms are going strong into their third season.
* LX has the same two outer chainrings as the XT (same Shimano part number on the middle ring, even!), and the LX has a more durable steel granny.
* LX is something like 8 or 10 grams heavier than XT -- probably due to the steel granny and the steel chainring bolts.
* The LX has no self extracting bolt. If that's really important to you, you can pick up a set at you LBS for $10 or $12.
I found mine for the unbeatable price of $40 at Performance Bike a couple of years ago. I've seen them for $45 to $50 since then at various online retailers.
If you really want to go cheap, Nashbar advertises square taper STX cranks for $30, and you wouldn't need the new bottom bracket. But you'd have to do some research on those cranks to see if they hold up. |

| Hollowtech | Matno Jul 15, 2002 4:04 AM | | I just got a brand new set of Deore Hollowtechs for $12. They would fit with your square taper bottom bracket, but they still have the advantage of Hollowtech and Shimano quality shifting. Granted, you won't find them for quite that cheap (I got lucky on eBay), but they could save you a bundle. Otherwise, I'd recommend the LX's. I've been riding those for over 3 years now and they are awesome. No reason to waste the extra money on XT's... I like them even better than the pair of RaceFace Turbine LP's I just sold. |
