Need assistance choosing bikebob the skydiver

Hello fellow mountain bikers....

I'm sure this question has been beaten to death, but I need some advice on my next bike purchase. I've been riding a Giant Sedona for the last 5 years and beaten the hell out of it. It's been a great, reliable bike and the only think I have broken are the pedals. I added a shock and upgraded the components from the original spec. However great it's been, it's time for an upgrade.

The type of riding I do is mainly single track, but I'd like to get into racing, in particular some novice adventure racing. I've talked to may people and some say "get a full suspension", others have said "you need a hardtail for that type of stuff". Some say "you need a trek" and then others say "Specialized is the only way to go". Then I get "Don't worry about the weight" and then again I hear "Save every ounce you can". The information is so conflicting that I just can't decide what I should look at. My budget isn't unlimited, it's in the $1200-$1700 range. Obviously, I'm not looking at ultra high end here, but something that will be ok for adventure racing and still be good for my single track fun on the weekends.

I'm not looking for a bike flame war, I'm really just looking for advice on the manufacturers that would be a good choice and suggestions on the frame types and equipment that would be best suited for my needs.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.
Bike Fit is KEY....Voelkel

The type of bike is not as important as how it fits you. The top tube length is just as critical as the stand over height. Go to http://www.coloradocyclist.com for a fitting. The frame material is probably second on the list. Go to http://www.bicylcing.com for the pros and cons of each frame material. Full Suspension and HT's have good and bad qualities which could be discussed for hours. Good Luck.
