| Any suggestions for good baggy bike shorts? | Locoman Jul 14, 2002 7:24 AM | | Spandex is functional, but I feel like an idiot when I walk into the store to buy a six pack after a ride at 10 o'clock on a Friday night. Looking for decent -light- baggy shorts. The canvas ones are way too heavy for those hot summer rides. Just looking for something in simple black or something.. |
| Zoic marqios diamond or Pearl Izumi Voltana.. | Timmy S Jul 14, 2002 8:23 AM | | The pad in the zoics are thinner and they are cheaper, but the Voltanas have a weird zippered compartmented left pocket and are warmer to wear. Also the Voltanas inner short only has two attachment points and gets kinda tangled up from washing them. Neither are perfect but as good as they get I suppose. I would like to try Nemas but don't need new shorts right now. |

| try | bn Jul 14, 2002 9:24 AM | | changing out of your lycra shorts soon right your ride..... get some of those old man cool terrycloth after shower wrap things from JC Penny (at $20 much cheaper but basically the same as a sport kilt). Bonus- your chances of saddle sores will be reduced. |
| Functional board shorts over stretch shorts | Just me Jul 14, 2002 10:35 AM | | I should be riding right now, but I just kept my old stretch shorts (they were expensive Pearl Izumi w/nice real chamois that's hard to find) and wear my baggy surf shorts over them (Side Out). Even though there are both plain black w/no design, they are light and cool enough (even in desert heat) and work in winter (to hug my hams and keep them warm). On overnight trips I can just change out my stretch shorts while the board shorts dry quickly. Plus they were cheaper separate because anything labeled "technical apparrel" esp. cycling gear, retailers seem to double/triple the cost. Most other riders think their just padded riding shorts, so they can't tell the difference---probably save 30-40 bucks over the season that I can invest into new tires/tubes/grips. |
| Check out REI | woodyak Jul 14, 2002 2:12 PM | | The one in Reading has a pretty good selection this year. I prefer the NEMA's over the ZOIC's. I have both and I use the NEMA one more. It has a better chamois and it's a bit tougher. The ZOIC isn't bad though. It's a bit more comfortable to just wear and walk around in. |
| Roach baggies over Voler shorts | Birdman Jul 15, 2002 6:05 AM | | Higher-end Zoic short are a close second.

| Nema | JF Jul 15, 2002 9:11 AM | | I'm in the same boat. For serious offroad riding, nothing beats the ol' tight black lycra.
However, I commute by bike 5 days a week, and also use it for transportation on the weekends. I'm not gonna stand around the elevator bank at my office building in ball huggers. No one needs to see that.
I recommend Nema's baggies. I've tried several different kinds, and they all suck compared to Nema. I wear these shorts winter or summer, every day of the week. Comfortable, and they make me look cool (which is no small task). |
