| Rear derailleur cage length? | lemmy Jul 14, 2002 5:21 PM | | What are the tradeoffs of the different cage lengths on rear derailleurs? |

You can use a med cage but either on a 1 or 2 ring set up or avoid the combos that give you trouble(ie. big/big).
A long cage will shift slightly less crisp, be a little closer to the ground, and will handle the large gear ratios todays bikes have.

| re: Rear derailleur cage length? | mweitzer Jul 15, 2002 10:38 AM | | I ordered a medium cage XT because I thought it would save weight and give higher clearance. Once the LBS adjusted my bike (ie: fixed my install), they told me that I could not use the top two cogs with my big chainwheel because of the short derailleur. They were right... My bike locked up going up the hill on the trail when I tried that combo. Long story short - if you care more about weight and crisp shifting, go medium - if you need all your gears, go long! |
