How NOT to shim a seatpost... (picture)Chris in MI

So my friend and myself went riding downtown here in Grand Rapids, MI, last night. We loaded three bikes on the rack, removing the seatpost from mine to make all three bikes fit well.

Upon arriving downtown, we quickly determined that my friend had left the seatpost on top of the car. He drove back home to try to find it in the parking lot of my apartment or along the road.

We didn't find it, but he had a much smaller seat tube (26.8 vs. the 31.6 I need) and saddle. Being the expert mechanic he is, he improvised a solution: using aluminum foil to shim the post and make it fit the frame.

It didn't work well, but it held together and we were able to ride.

The moral of the story? Don't misplace your seatpost. The picture is for your amusement. Feel free to mock, flame, and laugh. We were laughing quite a bit ourselves.

Or maybe with that $.10 deposit, he was unwilling to sacrifice one for shim material? ;-)
