24" or 26" wheels for freeride???(2 posts)

24" or 26" wheels for freeride???Filipe

Hi
I'm likely to buy a 2003 big hit, to which there'll be an optional swingarm (Goldtec, $250) to use a 26" rear wheel, rather than the usual 24".
I'll build the bike from scrach for freeride, with a single crown fork (Sherman, or one of the 2003 Z1 freerides).

So, which of the following wheel setups should I go for, in your opinion:

1- 24 rear, 26 front (as usual on big hits), looks a bit odd to me.
2- 26 front and rear, with the added cost of the swingarm, even if 26" wheels are a bit cheaper (to me).
3- 24 front and rear. In my understanting this would give better acceleration, and wheel strength, but maybe I would have to get shorter cranks?

Thanks,
Fil

go with the 26" front/24" rear. it will keep your geometry slack enough to roll steep drop-ins and it will help you accelerate faster. also, specialized had a problem with that frame being too long and the 24" wheel will make the bike more agile. a 24" front would add to the agility but will drop your front end too much making your head angle way, way to steep for serious freeriding. you should consider a jr/super t and go with 24" f&r, otherwise buy a norco - same suspension, better angles for technical riding, stronger, cheaper, and a little different from what everyone else is riding.
