SH-51 cleat vs. SH-55 Cleat - single vs multi release cleats(7 posts)

SH-51 cleat vs. SH-55 Cleat - single vs multi release cleatsBonee

Curious for those of you who have swtiched from the SH-51 single release cleat to the multi release SH-55, how much of a difference did it make on the specific pedals you were using?

I have the 515's now using the single release and they blow on release predictability. I'm teetering on getting the 959's, but I'm wondering if I can solve much of the problems by getting the multi release cleat instead for $20 vs. $120 for the 959's.

I have 515s and Eggbeaters, and the release on the Eggs is far more predictable. They are also cheaper and lighter than 959s.
I've thought of that...Bonee

But, I also have a road bike and I'm either rebuilding my 6 year old hard tail back up for a 2nd ride, or converting it to a singlespeed. Both of those have Shimano pedals as well and I'd like to be able to use the same shoes on all of them.

So I have a small consideration for keeping Shimano, but I was very close to getting eggbeaters a few weeks ago.

3 sets of eggbeaters will cost me near $300, one set of 959's will cost me $120.
Same boat...czardonic

I switch my Eggs between a my road bike, fixie and hardtail. Not an ideal situation, but tolerable.

BTW, a friend of mine switched to the multi-release cleats with his 515s and felt they were an impovement. It doesn't seem like the release would be any more reliable, but when they catch and you start pulling at random angles in frustration (or desperation) you've probably got a better chance of finding a release spot.

Have 515s too. Killed myself on the single release. Have the multi-release with no problems now. There is a big difference (actually had to increase the tension with the multi-release).

much much easier to release using the 55's with the same tension on the pedals. go for it.
Thank you both - I'll try it...Bonee

Now I just wish when I was given the freebie pedals by the LBS for my Santa Cruz SL and they just said, all you need to do is by cleats cause these were pulled off another bike for an upgrade, that I knew there were different cleats.

I swear by the time you learn all these little things like single release vs. multi release cleats, it all changes and you need to learn it all over again.
