| Mysterious noise coming from my bike... | eric wictor Aug 8, 2002 8:36 AM | | Maybe somebody can help me out here, as I can't figure out what's going on: When I ride my FS bike (Rocky Mountain Instinct), something makes a hollow, metallic "plok...clok" sound. It's a horrible noise that I only hear when pedalling with a lot of force. It sounds like it's coming from the frame. When I lock out my shock the noise dissapears almost completely, leading me to believe the it's coming from my suspension. I've checked everything, from cranks to seat to seatpost to what have you. I've taken the lower end of the linkage completely apart. The pivot near the bottom bracket had a tiny bit of play on it, so I cleaned everything, re-lubed the bushings with KryTech and tigtened the bolts again. No more play. Still the noise. Next step: I've removed the shock. I can't detect any play in ANYTHING to do with the linkage. The shock seems fine, too (no play). I do wonder, the bushings on the 'back' end of the shock (Fot Float RC) turn easily in the shock, as they have I tiny bit of play, while the bushings on the front end do not turn at all. Something must be wrong there... I REALLY want to know what's causing this. Is a pivot or axle worn? Are my shock bushings stuck - or should they be lose? Or is the noise coming from something totally different? Thanks in advance :0) |

It turned out to be the main pivot bushing. Had the LBS pull the pivot out, clean it all up and put it back together. The noise was gone...

| check the shock bushings | drew Aug 8, 2002 7:14 PM | | had the same problem with my float, took everything else apart and cleaned/lubed except for the bushings, mine were stuck together so tightly I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get them apart, I did eventually and cleaned and lubed them and problem solved. Another thing to check for is any type of bur or deep scratch on the bushing where it meets the frame, I don't know how it got there but I had one, being soft metal it was easy to file down. I can't say whether or not the bur was the cause of my creak but it couldn't be good to have it rubbing against the frame. Hope this helps. |
