| Is it all work it??? Much woe | MailMan Sep 3, 2002 2:59 PM | | Hi. I have the DiamondBack Topanga Comp (2001) with a Manitou Magnum (fork kinda blows). Anyway, everyone is telling me to upgrade my fork. The most common suggestion is to upgrade to a RockShox Psylo over the Marzzochi X-Vert. So this Psylo fork seems to have it all (you know, on the fly travel change, lockout, tension, etc) and I even found it for 190 bucks. But is it really worth it to upgrade? I don't race. It will give me better, smoother absorbtion if I hit a rock or two (or three or four....maybe five) but thats not gonna change the fact I hit the rock. Besides, I ride around stuff not through it. My current fork gives me decent absorbption over the real techical stuff (fun fun). Okay, maybe it will help me in control around corners and down hills and at high speeds (It think my fork could be a bit better in the speed/control dpeartment...long story). But will it be a big enough difference for the non racing rider like myself? My whole point is that I don't feel like spending 200 bucks on something I will have a for a small control or comfort change or just having it for the sake of having a cool fork. I want something that works well enough, not something Ned Overend would envy. When I'm biking I don't even think about the fork, and I am certainly not concentrating on what its doing. I have definetly noticed differences between hard forks and suspension forks (duh) and I love suspension but I'm only getting a better fork if its gonna make a noticable (and not only noticeable when you really think about it) difference in my riding.
The other issue is that I don't feel like rebuilding a fork every two hours. I don't even own a bottle of shock oil and I don't really care if my shocks are low on oil. Okay, maybe mine is running a bit low but my friend can do the honors for me. I'm not gonna think about it for another six months or so.
So I'm thinking of just forgetting the upgrade unless I can buy the fork with pocket change. How many of you are actually thinking about what your fork is doing and thinking "Good control over the chatter bumps, lets see how it does on this drop" when you are going 35 down a hill??? I'm not thinking about comfort (maybe control) when I ride just trying to notice the trail (and that cliff on my right). So what do you guys think? Should I or shouldn't I? I just spent 450 bucks in the last two weeks so I don't want to spend a ton of money. Help?

| random thoughts | bobcat Sep 3, 2002 3:35 PM | | i have last years psylo
has the adjustability but not the lock out
i came from an older manitou sx ti (still sitting in the corner)
the psylo is very plush in comparison and i like it much better
both forks handled well so i dont see a difference there
they say that ability is 90% rider and 10% bike so how much is it really gonna help huh
although i did get better when i got my new bike
the psylo will definetly be a much better fork but it also has 5 inches of travel, which might be more than you need
but i really like toys so i would say get it
and get everything else you want to
oh yea and ive been beating the hell out of my fork for over a
year and havent touched it (havent even oiled the seals - i think ill do that now)
hope that helps you decide |
