help with Giant seatpost(3 posts)

help with Giant seatpostmattf

I have a 01 Giant XTC SE 2 that I am very pleased with...except that Giant uses a shim in the seat tube of the frame to accomidate a smaller diameter seatpost. Why they do this I do not know, however I do know that mine creaks like a S.O.B. Has anyone else had this problem and have you fixed it. I think the inside diameter of the seat tube is 30.8, but again I am not sure of this. Can I get a 30.8 seatpost and bypass the shim? If so, where? I am willing to sacrifice weight and looks if it will prevent this annoying creak every time I shift my weight.

30.8 is the correct size.

I'm surprised you're having trouble with the shim. I've used them for a couple of years without a peep. Giant's explaination for the shim is it acts as a frame doubler at the seat tube / top tube junction, providing some extra material for the thin tubing.

Giant has also told me that in order to keep my warranty intact (on my 2001 NRS2), I must have at least 6" of seatpost inserted in the frame if I get rid of the shim. With the shim, only 4" is required. I had to go with a 400mm post to meet this requirement, and I'm just barely there (actually, a bit short of 6").

Thomson makes some 30.8 posts, but if you need 400mm, you'll lose the layback of the stock post if you go this route (Thomson doesn't make layback posts any longer than 330mm).

I opted for a 30.9mm Raceface XY on mine. I've likely voided the warranty by straying from a 30.8, but the post fits the frame like it belongs there. Nice and quiet it is.
